That Black Beauty is to die for !! I love black Customs. Someday soon!!!
Superb gear Jonesy. Superb.
That particular Black Beauty is the most collectible one, outside of an actual 57. Here's the story on it. In 88 and 89, they reissued an exact copy of the 57 3 pickup model. This was the Gibson Custom Shop, before they began to be called the Historic division. It listed for around $4700 back then, so you can imagine what it would list for today.....probably twice that.
I saw it pop up in the recycler.com listed as a LP Black Custom for $1400 obo in original case, in mint condition. I called this teenager, and asked him if he'd sell it for less. He said, I'll take $1300 for it, if you can buy it ASAP.
I literally sped to my bank, then to his house, which was a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, near the corner of Laurel and Mulholland. His dad is a TV Producer, and told me his dad bought it for him. He had NO idea that his dad probably spent $3700 on it!!!!!!! He told me he was selling it to buy a Godin. :laugh2: As soon as he opened the case, and I saw exactly what it was, I almost fainted, and THREW the $1300 on their marble table!! :laugh2:
I'm not kidding when I tell you it's the best playing Gibson LP I've ever layed hands on. The CS even antiquated those to look like a mint LP from 57, by yellowing the laquer, and giving the headstock an aged appearance. There's not one nick on the guitar, and I leave it in it's case, because I'd kill me to damage it in any way. That guitar, and the mint Jubilee stack are extremely rare to come by. Also, note that the two McCarties are 2000 Millenium models. I have a theory that any classic guitar made in 2000 will be crown jewels, years from now, just due to the date. Especially new classics like McCarties or Singlecuts. Also, the Bogner Ecstacy is worth way more than any other Bogner, since it's an unserial numbered, white chassis original, that has all the options Bogner ever offered. It's the best one he ever made, and when he saw it recently, he offered me two new ones for it, because he said that particular one is the only original he's seen in mint condition. I gigged with it for 2 years, and always kept it in a roadcase, so it's flawless.
