I'm Stupid

Hi, my name is Vajazzled
...and I'm stupid.

I bought a bunch of ceramic tone caps from stewmac, funny bastards use the biggest boxes to ship the smallest things, and when I opened the package to check those beaches out...I found the following numbers inscribed on the capacitors:
104
102
181
223
473z (possibly a 2 instead of the z, but who knows)
I have no idea which numbers correspond to which tone value, nor do I know why the value would not be written on the caps, instead of some seemingly random numerical classification:smash:

Like I said, "I'm stupid":dance:
(There was also an "F" above the 473z cap)
Help me sentient creatures of planet Earth, you're my only hope...that requires the least amount of effort on my part!

Re: I'm Stupid

Search Google for "Capacitor code chart" and you'll find a bunch. I still have to reference them from time to time.

This is USA naming convention.
First two digits correspond to the "value", then the last one is the power of 10 that multiplies such a value.

So...

104 = 10 * 10^4 = 100 000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 mF
102 = 10 * 10^2 = 1 000 pF = 1 nF = 0,001 mF
181 = 18 * 10^1 = 180 pF = 0.18 nF = 0,00018 mF
223 = 22 * 10^3 = 22 000 pF = 22 nF = 0.022 mF
473 = 47 * 10^3 = 47 000 pF = 47 nF = 0.047 mF

You can also see an European notation using a K, meaning a multiplicator factor of 1000 pF, by example, the previous values,
When using a decimal, the K goes between the two significant digits.

104 = 100K = 100 000 pF
102 = 1K = 1 000 pF
181 = 180 pF
223 = 22K = 22 000 pF
473 = 47K = 47 000 pF
472 = 4K7 = 4 700 pF

Again, some great info from Hermetico.

Just one correction Hermetico:
the 473 = 47,000pf = 0.047mf/uf (not 0.0047mf)
