Re: I'm such an irresponsible idiot. (Happy NGD!)

I also tried a Wildkat!

I just LOVED the sparkly gold binding, the Bigsby trem and the playability, but the P90 pickups on that thing were crazy dull.
Even with strings that felt fresh, I couldn't get it to open up.

Tried it side by side with my 339 and there was no contest. Fatter in humbucking mode, and way crisper and livelier when split.

I had the same impression of the Wildkat a year or so ago when I was looking for a P-90 guitar. They look great and feel pretty good, but completely "meh" in the sound department.

Congrats on your new 339 though... looks GREAT!! [emoji41][emoji1303]

If you're looking for P90 goodness, try any of the Reverend models where they're fitted. GREAT P90s!

I really want a 339. That would be awesome. Probably red, but I'd imagine I wouldn't turn any color down if it is the right instrument. Put some Seths in there.

+1!

I tried some of the Reverend models with P90 pickups and they sounded incredible.
I really liked this bad boy, the Reverend Jetstream 390:

But it's more than double the price of a Wildkat or my Epi 339 Pro, and frankly I don't think I really want or need a guitar with P90 pickups in my life.
Give me single coils in one guitar, and low-med-hot humbuckers in three different guitars and I'm happy.

Today I dropped some GHS Boomers 11-50 in my 339, tuned and intonated to E, and it feels wonderful to play. The neck has just a hint of relief, the action is medium-low and it's staying that way.
Very easy to play, which with 11s is something new to me since I've always used 10-46 tuned to E in my "Fender" scale length guitars.
I was expecting it to be a bit stiffer and I'm happy it's not!

I also dropped the polepieces down a bit on the bridge humbucker, since it was sounding a bit too nasal in the mids. It did the trick, sounds a bit smoother.

Of course, I couldn't avoid being an idiot and while adjusting the nut slots for the new strings I cut some of them too low, so it's buzzing when playing open strings a bit hard.
Note to self: Never watch Soccer and work on your guitars at the same time...

So tomorrow the nut slots will get the baking soda + superglue treatment for restoring the nut slot height, then I'll slowly work them down again.
I'll try and share some clips comparing my Les Paul to the 339 by the end of next week. :)

Nothing like getting your guitar to your own playable state!

We'll see how I go about pickups! So far, I'm happy with their sound.

Also, as GJ explained this guitar is such a PITA to work with, that I'll definitely do just one major upgrade down the road to everything inside, including the jack.
And by "I'll do" I mean my tech is gonna do it for me. :D

You should try some of these out!

One of the selling points for my Florentine was the cavity cover

Get you a rear LP cover
Have your Luthier install it
He'll appreciate it
So will you

Oh and get locking Grovers

I got the Gotoh version that matched the stamped cheapo tuners
But decided I really wanted the Grovers

I'll put the Gotoh on the Hummingbird I just ordered

I didn't know you could do that without compromising structural bits or something. That's a cool idea man. I might consider it down the road.
The stock tuners aren't phenomenal, but the guitar is extremely stable on it's tuning, I think even more so than my Les Paul and with the exact same strings.

I also fixed the nut slots and now they sit at their ideal height. It's by far my favorite guitar of the moment.

If they're available at a decent price in Chile, go for Gotoh SD90s over the Grovers. First of all, they weigh a lot less so they're less likely to make your new semi-hollow neck heavy. They're also a far better tuner than the current MIC Grovers. Lastly unless you're planning to install a Bigsby, you probably don't need locking tuners if your nut is cut properly.

I originally bought the SD90s for mine and opted for the Grover
The Gotoh has a 14 to 1 ratio while the Grover is 18 to 1

I prefer the back nut over the tall lock on the front of the headstock

But I put locking tuners on everything
It just makes string changes easier all around
I don't need them on my hard tails or Les Paul or acoustics
But I put them there anyway

+1 on faster string changes.

I likewise prefer the lock on the back; I have a set of the locking Gotohs on my SG and Sperzels on my Explorer and LP. I'm aware of the higher gear ratio, but I've just had too many problems with poor tolerances and play/slop with Grovers since they moved production to China. They used to make a great tuner, but at some point they let margin get in the way of quality. To each their own I guess.

Re: I'm such an irresponsible idiot. (Happy NGD!)

Well like I said
I plan on putting the SD90s on the new acoustic that should be be hers later in the week

Re: I'm such an irresponsible idiot. (Happy NGD!)

I seriously haven't even taken the SD90s out of the box

Looked one over when they got here

Dystrust says they are better and they may be
I'll have a better opinion in a few weeks

I have had no problems with the 502c set on either my Martin or my Florentine LP
I have had the ones on the Martin for a while with no issues at all

And these were the reason I went with them over the Gotoh

Its all good

I seriously thought there would be more said about carving up the back of the semi hollow

By the way, there isn't any bracing or anything back there . just look and see
My only concern would be to either to inset the cover in a shallow ledge
Or just lay it over jagged hole.
