I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

Hey guys!

I was listening to some alternative type metal stuff...and thought, "Hmm...I'm gonna set my Zoom's built-in drum machine to something fairly fast and see what happens."

LOL....I crack myself up! At 47, not even my BRAIN works this fast (much less my fingers). I only took the first half (1 minute)....someone else can take the second, ok? (I'm too tired and need a nap now!) LOL!

Have fun!

Dave

Two MP3's here:

The original with just my playing the backing progression and lead guitar...and an open spot following it for anyone who wants it. :)

The second MP3 is with one of my internet jam buddies, Enrique Romero from Florida. This guy is just amazing!!!!!!! He takes the second minute...and whenever I begin thinking I'm a decent player for an old guy....some young gun comes out with THIS kind of playing!!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr!!!! You'll enjoy this guy for sure!

Bee,

Wow....someone listened THAT soon!!! How cool!

Thank you...not only for taking a listen....but for the welcome as well!!

Didja listen to the second take??? It's the best one (imho).

By the way...on the first lead part, I start out in the bridge position (Duncan Hot Rails on a Strat)...but you can hear me shift back and forth between that and the stock single coil neck pickup. But in case anyone was wondering what a Hot Rails sounds like on a Strat....there ya go. :)

Thanks again Bee!

Dave

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

I like your take on it too, faster isn't always better. Sounds good.

welcome!

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

Xeromus,

Thanks bro!! LOL....I keep telling myself..."Phrasing is important, phrasing is important"...but it begins to sound like "Size doesn't matter, size doesn't matter" after a while. (Especially when I hear Enrique do his thing!)

I'm beginning to hate guys who can play blistering fast and actually pick every note, when I'm stuck doing legato runs up and down the neck. ::smirk::

Thanks for the vote of confidence (and for taking the time to listen). Very cool!

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

:) I agree with Dr. X... and phrasing is most important IMO, which is why I'm working on it. Any tips?

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

what I MEANT to say was, not bad for an old fart. :) no just kidding

phrasing is very important. It's the same reason I don't like yngwie, way too boring for me.

Dr. X? I like that :cool3:

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

mah, thats slow... ;)

nice phrasing indeed, it's not that slow either. you better not hear Nuntius here if you think enrique is too damn good. the takes are very nice, but the 2nd solo gets really lost in the mix.

you made a nice 1st step into the forum =) welcome.

+1 I have the same combo and I love this guitar I just need a fret Job, but I am getting a epi 310 and stick a 59n JBb combo in that sucker, for some humbucker action!

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

Very nice tracks, a bit mucky on the mix but the playing is very nice. Totally reminds me of the Shrapnel releases back in the day. Very nice vibrato going on. Looking forward to hearing more.

And I thought I was old!!! lol

Played with heart,,,,

Geez Dave and Narsh! That was terrific! Fwiw, Dave, you more than hold your own with anyone. Great bluesy pocket and feel!

Whoa!!! What great responses from everyone!! Thank you so much! As a new member here, it means a lot to me...to have so many take the time to listen and comment. You'll notice that my style of responding is to take a moment to individually respond to each of the posters, so scroll down...and take a look.

Rainmaker,

Thanks again (regarding the phrasing). I probably approach phrasing a little differently than some players. There are certainly guys out there who are way faster than I am. But one thing I often notice speed-demons exhibiting is a tendency to "stay in the pocket" a little. Yes, their technical expertise is awesome....but I'm sometimes left with the feeling that I've just listened to an emotionless speed exhibition...with no musical sense whatsoever. Know what I mean? On the other hand, it's difficult for me to listen to 4 note runs (a la B.B. King)...where it's filled with emotion, but simply not technicaL enough for my tastes. In my own quest to derive a hint of phrasing or "feel", I try to listen to as many players as I can. I thoroughly enjoy listening to Peter White, who seems to literally sing through his guitar phrasing (he's a smooth jazz artist who is just incredible). I also like listening to Yngwie, or Neal Schon (Journey)...and even to one of the members here (Scott Lerner, below.) He doesn't know it, but I have every one of his tunes downloaded from his site...and they're on my regular playlist. He's a jazz and jazz fusion player with incredible tone....and a style akin to Robben Ford. Scott's phrasing is a tough one to mimic. He takes chances...and goes places you wouldn't expect. Our styles differ, but I try to do the same thing (go places on the fretboard that people might not expect.) I guess that's my best advice. When you find yourself stuck...try something completely different than you'd normally do. I use a lot of half-bends...or weird hammer-ons...that seem to add to a style I'm comfortable playing. I have a bunch of MP3's all over the net, some with tabbed lessons...and if anyone would be interested in seeing them, just let me know, ok??

callous frigid chill,

Thank you! But...um....LOL....I don't recognize the screenname. Do you have a different one at G.com?? My account over there is locked out once again (even my newest one)....so I doubt I'll be visiting there much anymore. :::sigh::: Anyways, thank you for the welcome!

Xeromus,
LOL...I KNEW you meant to say "old fart"!!!!!! LOL. By the way...I disagree on the Yngwie thing. Yes, all of his stuff is the same "speed neo-classical" stuff....but many of his songs have distinct personalities...and I love the way he uses off-timing, monster two-step bends....or subtle whammy, or whatever. I believe his phrasing is awesome. You may want to give him a few more listens....but listen very carefully to what he's doing on the fretboard. He's not just a speed guy...although his precision is of course...incredible.

Peterku,

You're exactly correct on your input!!! Dead on! I originally had no intention of actually doing any kind of recording with that piece. I was simply practicing with my Zoom GFX707's built-in drum machine, experimenting with some timing I don't normally do. Then I thought, I'm gonna lay down some basic rhythm track....and play some lead stuff along with it. When I was done, I tossed it online for my buddies at G.com to play with...and loved what Enrique did with it! Sooooo...now I'm thinking about actually spending some time with it. Polishing the mix....creating real drum patterns, etc. The thing I'm afraid of is losing the raw feel that the two solos in this mix have. Oh well, might be worth a try!? Thanks for the feedback by the way! Much appreciated!

Davey,

Great comments to read...especially from an old geezer like me. LOL!! I'll keep my eyes open for stuff from Nuntius! Thanks for the welcome too!

StrangeSound,

Thanks for the comments...and for the welcome! Much appreciated! Damn....this is a pretty cool place! I wonder what took me so long to find it??? Oh well, glad I did.

Biu,

"That was awesome" So, um....does that mean it made it to your playlist???? LOL, just kidding! Thank you bro!

Fiber-Optics,

LOL....yes, I rock.....for an old guy. :::smirk::: (Thanks) Also, good luck on the SG (you saw my comments in the other thread, right?? By the way...don't let the bolt-on aspect dissuade you.) Some purists think a bolt-on neck for an SG is demeaning in a way. It's not. Personally, because of the SG's inherent design issues, I think it's probably a safer version than the standard set neck. Anyway, good luck with that!

kevlar3000,

Yep....definitely mucky on the mix. I just bought the ProteusX soundcard (EMU) and it comes with Steniberg's Cubasis. So far, coming from a Sonar background....I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what I'm doing with the software yet!!! LOL! God, the old Shrapnel release reference is awesome. Us old guys grew up with that stuff. The players they had on that label were incredible...and to even be "slightly" compared to that is an honor. Thanks! P.S., you're 35...so you have to treat us old guys with respect. Got it??? :::smile:::

Marcel,

Know any good drum sequencing guys???? This song could most definitely use that!! Thanks for the comments...and the listen.

scottl,

Wow. THAT is too cool! How've you been man??? Making babies I understand!! (Congrats!) By the way, read my response to Rainmaker above. I've been listening to your stuff a lot lately. Practically every day. And yes...I'm trying to steal a lick or two here and there. LOL! Sorry. It's just that your playing is so...well...inspiring. I even created a patch on my Zoom that's called "Lerner" (I swear to god! I should send you a picture of it!) It's a feeble attempt at recreating your sound, albeit on a Fernandes Strat through a Zoom and direct into the PC. LOL!!! We need to jam. We never have...and for as long as we've known each other, there's no excuse for that! Whaddya say???
