I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

Thanks Twilight.

I don't think Dave was planning on this being some big arrangement thing.
Just a quick little jam.
Matter of fact, I think he was originally planning on just soloing over the whole thing. But, couldn't come up with anything he liked for the second half. So, he tossed it to us dogs. :D

Well, you definitely have some chops man!
You can check out the Doobie Brothers Jam thread I started in the Tips + Clips section, to hear some of my improvisational stuff; just a good, fun jam tune ... :) :)

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

it's always the modest ones you have to look out for ;) speak softly and carry a bit axe..heheh..

great playing dude!

the second clip didn't work though =(

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

Dave, your focus on phrasing has paid off well for you - that was some tasty stuff - I am not a metal head but I like tasteful playing and you've got that - great sound too.

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

nuntius,

Thank you!! By the way, I went back and edited the link so everyone can hear Enrique's playing. DigitalSoundPlanet is often down, and that's where Enriwue had uploaded his version. The new link works, and you guys should definitely check it out! I love the contrast between the two styles! Also, nuntius...I've already been informed by the rest of the gang about your playing prowess!! We oughtta do a collab, dont'cha think??

kherman,

Do I know you???

LOL...just kidding! To one of my favorite guitar players (and people) I've met via the online guitar community...it's great to see you here!! Kent, this seems like a much more appropriate place for a guy like you than G.com. For those of you who are just meeting Kent, he's a great guitar player...his band is awesome...and he has an enviable guitar collection. We don't always agree on stuff, as I'm a cheap-gear-does-fine kinda guy....and Kent's collection of gear is worth more than some people's houses!!! LOL! However, he's humble, good natured...and REAL knowledgable about any and everything having to do with guitars! Thank you to everyone who's welcomed him "into the fold" here at the SD forums!

TwilightOdyssey,

Kent's right. Actually...the story behind the jam is this. After speaking with the guitar player from the band My Chemical Romance (check out their song "I'm not okay" at www.MyChemicalRomance.com)...I began listening to several of their tunes...and found that I really liked them! It's kind of a metal/alternative teen angst type of band, but well composed, well written, and well-played. Besides, Ray Toro (the guitar player) plays an Epiphone! You'd have to know my thoughts on loving cheap gear to fully understand why that impresses me! Anyway, I thought....God, a lot of this new music is at a time signature I'm not used to playing. So I plugged into my Zoom GFX707 multi-effects pedal and found a drum pattern that seemd pretty quick. Then I laid down a rhythm guitar track....and went back and took a stab a few lead riffs. I made it halfway :::smirk:::....and needed a nap! LOL! I thought I'd post it as is for the hell of it...and see if anyone else wanted to take the second half. So far, Enrique did...and of course, as you know...so has Kent. Any other takers???? In any case, it wasn't intended to be anything but a practice track, although it's turned out to be something I may some more time actually putting together. It's pretty listenable....so what the heck, huh???

shreder,

LOL, thanks man! I can afford to be moddest because I'm just a 47 year old guy who's way past the "prime" of even thinking about playing for a living anymore. I have an online real estate marketing company that keeps me too busy anyway. However, I definitely have fun doing things like hitting Guitar Center and grabbing a Squier Strat off the rack....walking over to a Line6 Spyder amp...and playing the heck out of it!! It's fun to listen as the Marshall stacks and PRS's get quiet!! It's also kinda fun to watch the younger players come around the corner....hoping that the "guitar player" they're listening to wants to be in their band. When they see it's this graying father of four, they almost faint. LMAO!!! The cool part is the realization that music is pretty universal, and we wind up sharing ideas...riffs...etc. I love that. Since I never decided to pursue music as a career after the age of about 23, it's nice to share whatever knowledge and/or experience I have to offer to anyone out there who finds it at all useful. In any case, I really appreciate you taking the time to listen. A lot! Go back and try the original "take 2" link again. You'll love Enrique's playing!

bellicose,

Thanks man! The lead tone is just a cheap Fernandes Strat through a Zoom multi-effects pedal and direct into my computer. I got rid of all my amps a long time ago. I also own a '74 Les Paul Goldtop, but I never play it. The Fernandes I bought as a throwaway for the office. Something to dink around on when I worked late. I didn't care if it got stolen or beat up or whatever, as it only cost $179.00. However, now...it's become the only guitar I play! I love that thing! I replaced the bridge pickup with a Hot Rails...and swapped out the 5-way switch for a smoother operating one, but other than that....it's still the cheap stock guitar. It plays like silk, and I too like the tone I get from it. However, at Guitar.com, I've endured a lot of grief for believing (and promoting) that a person doesn't have to spend $1,000's of dollars for gear in order to play or sound decent. I respect those who own high-end gear. But if they start belittling the player who can only afford a Squier, I can't keep my mouth shut. The new Squier Standards or Epiphones or Agiles or whatever....are really good guitars. I guess I feel like it's the player who makes the guitar....and not the guitar who makes the player, know what I mean?

Oh god...I'm rambling. Anyway....thanks for taking the time to listen and sorry for the rant.

take 2,

Thank you from one old timer to another! LOL! I'll upload some of my more "relaxed" stuff, as I only do the metalhead stuff for kicks. You'll probably like some of my other stuff better! Keep your eyes open before the end of the week, ok?? Thanks for the compliments! Very cool place here!

Dave

hey, if you're good, you're good..I don't give a crap what age you are...LOL..and you can play, dude...no doubt about that =)

now you got me hankering to go into guitar center and play on a bunch of stuff I have no intention of buying..hehe...

I've gotten that in guitar stores a few times too..once one guy at same ash walked up to me when I was tryin' out some mesa gear and I was like 'oh crap..he's gonna tell me to turn it down'...but instead it went on about how I could play and that it was nice listening to someone who had my particular style rather than trying to play Nirvana (yeah, this story is just a few years old..lol)...but it's always flattering!

I'm modest too..but I think I stink, so it's easy to be modest..lol

I'll go back and try to listen to that second clip...

Re: I'm too old to play this kinda stuff!!!!

ok, finally got the second clip to work..

your buddy's a good player...very good =0) but honestly, I like your solo better, MEDIA...there's more of a destinct style there...

I also like that your lead's only one track..lol...I think your buddy's woulda been better served if he only did one lead track as well instead of overlaying two leads...

then again, you're both better than me, so this means nothing..LOL
