In-ear monitor system

My dad's going deaf right now. He's been playing gigs since 1970 as his full time job and it's been taking a toll on his ears (bass and lead vocals). Right now he plays at a small restaurant on south beach-not as dB intense as his past jobs, but the everyday pounding is making him lose his hearing.

His doctor recommended in-ear monitors so that he can hear himself and protect his ears. What's a good brand for this and where can i get a pair for my old man?

I would advise AGAINT them, unless he has his own sound tech.
The reason for this is that in ear monitors run from the PA. If someone does something wrong, your father will go deaf, or at least have his eardrums ruptured.
This was told to me by someone I know that does a TON of high end live sound gigs.
That's my 2 cents.

he'd just run them through the phones stereo output on the mixer. It's a small gig, he uses a 200 watt sla-2 from a mackie 12 channel mixer. he does the sound himself and the board is far from everyone else including his brother on the guitar.

I see what you mean though, if someone does something stupid he can lose his hearing. But it wouldn't run off the PA in this situation, he'd probably just run it off the mixer phones out which is only pure signal, not powered signal.

Here's a good place to read up on which ones are good:

As for the dangers, he could simply feed the audio into an inexpensive stereo compressor/limiter, then into a small headphone amp. By setting the limiter properly, he'ld be safe against any "accidents".

Glad to read this, I had aways thought that an in -ear monitor system could go haywire and F* you up. There should be some sort of "deadman switch " that the wearer can set up for these things.

+1 for your dad trying to protect himself hearing wise., it sets a good example. Everyone should pay attention to this, so as to enjoy tunes all our lives.

i think he's just going to get the es49 westone limiter/plug with custom molding. It's not a huge gig or anything, and he can adjust the volume with the different filters they offer.
