In praise of the MXR Flanger

I was messing around with the MXR Flanger yesterday, it's such a good modulation pedal. I seem to have forgotten how much more it does than just a deep swoosh....

Of course it does the EVH Jet plane thing, but dial back the Regen and put the Manual at max or just under and you've got a great chorus. Slow sweeping chorus, faster more narrow chorus, or put them both high for the pseudo Leslie tones. Ramp in a touch of Regen and bring the Manual back for a Flangy Chorus, then bring the Manual all the way down for a big hollow Flanger. Set the Regen high for a Barracuda Flanger, and with the Width at minimum you can move the comb filter frequency with the Manual control.

Long story short, if you've got one in a box and haven't used it recently, try it out again and really give the knobs a workout, you may be pleasantly surprised how many tones are in the box you've forgotten about!

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

In my old age, I REALLY appreciate a 4 knob Flanger....

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

Have had one since they first came out with 'em ('75?). Gave most of my old MXR pedals to Larry Hoppen back in my studio days, but I kept the flanger. Always liked it; I should pull the thing out of the old-gear closet.

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

The only issue I have with my MXR Flanger is the apparent volume drop when engaged. Mine is on my big board, and won't fit on my mini board, so I haven't used it in a long time. I need to rectify that...

That is the exact reason why I got rid of mine and bought the MOOG. The MOOG allows me to adjust the output level and the mix.

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

Is there a super mod pedal that does chorus/flange but with:

-Rate
-Depth (Width)
-Regen
-Delay Time (Manual) ranging from super short (2ms) to long (100ms)
-Mix (dry to vibrato, 50:50 at the middle)
-Level (overall output)
-Treble/Bass or Tone
-LFO shape

I feel like the Chase Bliss stuff may do it, but he just discontinued the Spectre, and I don't know the delay time. Maybe the Earthquaker range? Of course the more controls you get the more bad sounds you can get.... good old CE-2 never sounds bad, right?

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

Close enough for horseshoes.

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

Yes, yes it is.

I love mine. It is the best Flange/Chourus I have ever played through. The cool thing is most of the parameters are controllable with an expression pedal. I would suggest trying to find one and trying it out. Pack a lunch you are going to be there for a while.

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

I recently put together a second board which is just for "color" pedals and put my MXR Flanger, Phase 90 and Dunlop Trem pedals on it.. (Also my A/DA flanger and a couple of others..) was tinkering with it a couple days ago.. What settings you using for the VH jet plane tone? Other setting recommendations??

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

The VH Jet Plane is Manual, Rate and Depth at noon and Regen between 3pm and max.

(Manual is delay time)

The Manual and Depth are interactive. If Depth is up high, Manual doesn’t do much as it’s already sweeping through the majority of the delay time. When Depth is lower, manual has a ton of effect, from intense flanger to chorus.

I’ve been dialing in the chorus tone and pressing the EVH button for jet plane.

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

LOL, I just realized I haven’t used my MXR EVH flanger since I brought it home. This is some kind of dissociative disorder.

crying shame. Send it my way for proper utilization. Id like to have one of the EVH ones , but since I have one of the normal ones, Im having trouble justifying the cost just to have the button.

It’s an expensive button if you’ve already got the rest of it.

Re: In praise of the MXR Flanger

I have an original, hardwired one that sounds amazing, but the cord, sketchy bypass and higher noise made me want a reissue. I already had the EVH Phaser, so I knew I wanted the EVH Flanger too. The cool thing is being able to have two presets available (EVH and you knob setting). Unnecessary? Completely. Do I like it? Yes.
