So i've contemplated it for a while now, sold a couple knick knacks here and there, and finally saved up for one.... but have no idea what to get in the lines of brands that make 12 strings. -- any advice?

Price range is about 600-1000

I've played a couple very nice 12-string Seagulls. Anything else in that range that I've seen has been all Yamaha, Ibanez, and a few random crap brands

can't go wrong with a seagull. i have a seagull 6 string that i love. for 12 string though i bought the martin one that is not real wood except for the top. i'm probably in the minority but i LOVE that guitar. sounds great to me and because the neck is not wood it rarely goes out of tune, which i believe is a common issue for 12 strings. got it for $550.

About your Martin that's "not real wood except for the top".....I just bought a 6 string model last week, the DX1R and I LOVE it!! Really didn't want to spend anymore than $600.00 for an acoustic, tried all kinds and this particular Martin was one I never considered until I played it. Couldn't believe how good the sound that comes from within. I'll tell ya, considering that it's a "budget guitar" and the materials it's made from I think it's one of the better bang for the buck guitars.

Make sure that whatever you get that the guitar has great tuners ... if not plan on adding extra bucks for 12 tuners.

I'm an Ovation user. There are numerous models in that price range. The thing I like about Ovations is that they're tough as hell and can tolerate some abuse, their frequency response is flat across the board and they're LOUD.

Spend 200 bucks and get an old Yamaha FG series. Great 12 string acoustics.

Re: in the market for a 12-string

anyone know any good electric 12 strings? not double necks, preferably not a rickenbaker or a fender XII

The Dean Boca is an awesome 12 string electric. Sounds more like a Gibson than a Ric. Great guitar for the $$$$$

It doesn't look like a Dean either except for the headstock
