In the market for over-24 fret guitar

Questionologist
Interested in the Hamer Virtuoso or something like it. (The Virtuoso was short-lived, 1987-1991 production.) Anyone have one of these to unload or can suggest something like it?

Re: In the market for over-24 fret guitar

I remember Washburn made a 36 fret neck neck thru with a single HB and floyd.

Only ever saw one.

Weedlymeedlies on a normal guitar are annoying as ****; are you guys just trying to make the most obnoxious, squeekiest, shrillest note ever heard?

I'm basically trying to do the opposite...the biggest, boomiest, evilest low note ever.

EDIT: BRAINSTORM!! you could set one of these 36 fret things up for Nashville tuning and use it to punish your dog!!

Re: In the market for over-24 fret guitar

I take it you never ever play harmonics on your guitar? Pianos also play much higher notes than that. I'm not a metalhead but have an actual need for the higher notes for certain songs for a recording project, a jazz-fusion kind of thing that's not "weedly-meedly".

The idea of this thread was for folks to offer me HELPFUL information, not to offer insults and brag about trying to get "evil low notes".

Re: In the market for over-24 fret guitar

Uli Jon Roth's sky guitar has a bunch o' frets, but he actually prefers to leave fretboard devoid of frets for the highest, violin range of notes because the frets get so close together that it's difficult to hit the right fret - the level of precision that you need is just mind boggling.

Have you looked at any fretless guitars with an extended fretboard on the high notes? There's a bit of a learning curve, unfortunately, but a fretless guitar sounds like it would be perfect for fusion...

edit: I've also read somewhere that there's a way to convert a cheap-o (or expensive-o) electric into a fretless guitar by yanking the frets and filling the holes with epoxy (which would make a nice visual reference point for when you're learning) and re-radiusing the fretboard (fretless guitars are supposed to work better with flatter radi). Anyway, good luck with your search, sorry I can't be more helpful.

I'm sorry you found what I said to be insulting;

remember that what we do is PLAY

Re: In the market for over-24 fret guitar

That is one crazy Maton, who'd have thunk it? It looks like the Danelectro longhorn bass. I bet it's one of those 'wtf were we thinking?' for the company.

The Ibanez Xiphos has 27 frets, though that might be a bit too metal for fusion ;). Though, with the railroad frets Ibanez uses, playing up that high would be tricky.

The Gary Kramer guitars. Didn't someone on the forum buy one of these within the last year?

There's also those Rand guitars.

Wow. Lots of frets AND 7 strings?!! There's extended range for you! All it needs is multiple outputs so you can send the low and high notes to different amps so you can put different EQ/gain/effects on them!

Hamer only built 15-20 Virtuosos, ever. They were kind of a custom order model. There are quite a few people looking around for them. If you find one, congrats. Occasionally one does pop up for sale. The Virtuoso had a longer scale, over 26". It actually wouldn't be a bad guitar for putting heavy gauge strings on and down tuning. I seem to recall at least one other guitar builder (might have been someone local though) building similar long scale, 36 fret guitar back in those days.

The Washburn Stephens guitar is an alternative. Lots of frets with easy access all the way to the highest ones.

In the last post, the closeup picture on the neck and pup sure does give an optical illusion that the frets are slanted. :eyecrazy:

I think we might have a winner there with the blue ones. What's the price range?

Re: In the market for over-24 fret guitar

Gee what a coincidence. I play too. What is your beef with me on this? I don't get it.

My only beef is that you perceived beef...i am just joking around with you man.

I meant "we" as in "us" as guitarists. We play and playing is fun. I was playing with my first post and I'm playing with this post.

As musicians, playing is what we do. So have some fun with it bro.

Feel free to poke fun at stoners who tune to drop A and use too much gain whenever you want man. I'll be laughing right beside you.

Yeah, what is it with you beehive-gain people who want to ban solos and step all over the bassman's toes? Let the man work and leave everything below E to HIM!
