In the Workshop: Les Paul refret

Re: In the Workshop: Les Paul refret

Hmm maybe I'll give that a shot, never had an issue that I'm aware of but it makes some sense

Holy crap, that's an amazing job!

I've been eyeballing the Stew Mac refretting kit:

Is there anything missing from it that you would consider essential to do a really good job replacing frets? (I notice in your other thread that you use a fret press rather than a mallet to set the frets, and use syringes for the gluing.)

40 plus years at the bench here....
You don't use the exact same tools as me, or the same technique...
But if you came in my shop and needed a job, I'd say you were hired.
Well done, and top notch pix.

The only things I would suggest out of that kit at these two things.

https://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Files/Fret_End_Dressing_File.html

However, Stew Mac is no longer the only game in town. You can find quality tools elsewhere for less money.

I like using a press because it is more consistent (IMO), but sometimes you need a hammer. I made my own press from a Harbor Freight arbor press and added the fretting cauls.

Hey thanks for the documentation - makes me consider trying it one day

Re: In the Workshop: Les Paul refret

What interests me most, and I wasn't able to find that written somewhere, is how you get the new frets in.

Press+cauls? Hammer?

Magic, what else?

:p I used both here, but normally use my press. I skipped over some things here because they are mentioned several times in other threads I have done.

Killer work. You can see the meticulous attention to detail and pride you take in your craft.
