i dig on mahogany HSS guitars. the singles are warmer but still sound like a single (i dont like neck buckers). Notch tones are phat, and i would go with a bucker that sounds good with a 250k pot. (VHPAF) I actually designed a "signature" for myself... it actually looks alot like Andy Timmons' guitar... but with a different bridge pickup and creme covers.

I'm thinking there would probably be more guys on here looking to vote for Ash than for Basswood... I'm unsure myself so I'm not going to vote, it would be between Alder and Mahogany for me.

point well taken:sword:

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

I like a Maple cap on a mahogany body, alder, ash, or basswood... depending on what I'm going for.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

1) Brazillian Rosewood
2) Honduran Mahogany
3) Haiwaiin Koa
4) Korina( white limba)
5) Genuine Southen Swamp Ash
6)Alder
7) Big leag (soft)Maple
8) Indian Rosewood
9) Northern hard ash or Japanese Senn( different wood same properties)
10) Poplar

There are many other less well known and exotic(bizarre?) but not rare woods. Like Zebrawood, I think There are some exotic and scarce to rare rainforest woods like purple heart that way up there on the tone-scale.

i like maple capped mahogany and ash the best. they're different tones for different vibes, but those 2 are my favorite.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

I'm preferring darker tone woods lately, like mahogany and basswood. Can't go wrong with alder though. Maple caps on the former two are always nice...

Best tone wood for WHAT? That is the question.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

I think some guys have been reading internet BS...

It really depends on the guitar for me...for Fenders I really like a nice piece of swamp ash but I have several alder guitars that are really great too.

For Gibsons high quality and as light weight as possible Mahogany with or without a good maple top is also great but my limba Moderne is easily one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played much less owned...

If you move on to acoustic instruments thats a whole new and different ball of wax!

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

alder is the one that will generally get to my favorite tone the easiest. yeah.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

So far Alder as been my favourite, with a maple neck. Gives a very crisp, punchy sound that isn't overly bright, or overly warm. I've also tried a mahogany body, but I find mahogany a little too warm for my tastes.

do u have a link to that "make ur own signature guitar?"

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

I voted mahogany, but I believe it is best when combined with a maple top. Les pauls are the obvious example of this, but my prs was the guitar that converted me to this wood combo probably for ever.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

I think Alder is the best all around tone wood. Can be used in a traditional or modern context and fit the bill nicely either way.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

I like alder, simply because I know what I'm getting with it, and it has a fairly flat, clear response that doesn't color the tone a lot. "Mahogany" could be any number of things, but most of the time it's something kinda crappy.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

Depends on the kind of guitar we're talking about. I like alder for Strats, ash for Teles, mahogany for Tele thinlines, etc., etc.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

My experience is limited to single coils guitars with either Alder or Ash bodies, and humbucker equiped guitars with Mahagony. Of those, I prefer the responsiveness of Alder.

I would love to try both an archtop (preferably 25" scale), and strat style flat top bolt neck with Koa bodies.

Re: In your own opinion best tone wood

Had to go with Alder as Maple was conspicuously absent. Also, I don't think basswood would get many votes at all as it is pretty transparent (ie: most Ibanez' sound like Dimarzio's). As stated, nothing beats the sound of ash, or a maple-capped mahogany body... Needs multiple choices! Can't pick just one great sounding wood, otherwise we'd all only have one guitar! :friday:
