Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

The paint job looks great and I love the sparkle of it and the changing colours on the body. Overall a real nice looking axe.;)

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

The guitar arrived Thursday in good condition by the shipping company. I have to say that the guitar is nice. The neck feels great and the trem moves smoothly. But, the seller stated that the guitar had recently been setup...no way. Maybe by Helen Keller. The 5 way switch is shot. The trem is so sloped you could ski off of it and the action is at SRV height. I think its got 11g strings too...way too heavy for me. So needless to say it's going in for the once over.
I went and bought a big brass block and silent springs today so once they arrive i'll drop off the guitar.

Here is my question to the members.

The guitar has a D-Sonic in the bridge and stock neck and middle.
First, the D-Sonic is as good as gone, i don't like it. I have a Standard spaced JB that is going in. I know it isn't trem spaced but hey, Eddie put a Gibson pickup in Frankie and he did just fine with it. Back in the day there was no trem spaced pickup and people did just fine with swaps. If i had a trem spaced i'd use it, but i don't so...

So what are we thinking for the other pickups?
Possibly Jazz neck and STK-S6 middle?

I'm a rock/hard rock guy playing through a Splawn Quickrod. I'm not necessarily trying to cop anyone's particular tone per se, but i like DiMartini, Skid Row, Cantrell, hell Gary Moore...

On hand i have a BKP Rebel yell neck and
a PAF 36th Anny neck
BUT...they both have chrome covers on them and i'm not so sure i want to take them off. Besides i don't know what color bobbins are underneath, Probably black, which is what id like but i don't know for sure.

What say you?

I’m not a big fan of the jazz pup for shred. Not bright enough imo. But other peoples opinions, and your own opinion may be more valid, because the guitar i had it in had a lot of on and off electronic issues so i’m not convinced i heard it how it is supposed to sound... i hated it

Maybe you can order a set from that KGB guy. Cant remember what the fok his name is?

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

A set of what?
I was referring to the Fokin pickups, maybe that guy could make a neck and middle pickup for you in black since you dont want to remove those covers. I bet the 36 is dbl cream under the cover. For Duncan I really like the Sentient

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Lol...I understand now. I had NO idea wtf you were talking about. There's a guy out of the UK that has a store called KGB Guitar or something like that!
but yes, that is an option too.

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Been monitoring this thread (too) since it started.

Didn't chime in because I've nothing to contribute (what with it being Ibanez and all).

But I sure am happy for you, Gtrjunior, that it arrived and you have it in hand.

Does look nice for sure.

Well done. And enjoy.

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Congrats, I still love Ibz necks, although they are almost too thin now! The Edge Pro is a fine trem, I've used the 7 string version. They are well built, work great, and have hardened steel where it needs to be. If you want the locking studs you can get some from Rich at Ibanez rules, but it's probably not a huge deal.

The new Edge Zero are the ones that bug me, the intonation screws go into the cast base instead of a hardened steel insert, those fine threads strip really easy. They can be fixed with helicoil inserts, but IMHO they should be designed right from the factory.

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Something I forgot to mention before. I did have a Pearly Gates set in the Ibanez before and it sounded incredible. I wanted a guitar with blues tone for the blues band I was in, but with the awesome playability only an Ibanez can afford. It did exactly that. It sounded so good with the split positions too, with the stock single coil.. so if that's something you're into, I can say it did sound very very good. Something about the basswood snarl works really well with PAF pups.

Now I'm back into metal, quit the blues band, and the pearly gates had to go so the stock ones are back in for now.

But your choice of JB is a good one ! I have decided on that for mine as well, rather than the full shreds. The JB has never done me wrong and I believe it will sound awesome in the Ibanez. I'm still debating on my neck pickup, I want a 59' but I hate how they need to be custom ordered to have a logo, 4 conductor, and short legs. Long leg 59's will definitely not fit in this guitar. Still debating on the single coil too! Please let me know how your research goes.

Finally, FWIW, since it will be quite some time before I can afford a pickup upgrade (unless someone buys my pearly gates on the trading post ;) ) I have been convinced by a friend to keep the stock pickups and be happy with them for quite some time now. He is a tone guru, and he let me play thru his modelling rig which uses impulses and such. With the stock pickups ,we were able to get basically the EXACT same tone from each and every metallica album and I'm telling you, it was spot on. It sounded so good. So now I'm convinced that the stock pickups are better than what people tend to think they are , although I'm such a Duncan - head I'm certainly still going to upgrade once funds allow.

Here's a photo of mine when it still had the Pearlys.

You know, I think for now I might put the JB in, have it all set up nice, nice and see where I’m at.
With the little bit of playing I did with it so far the neck pickup didn’t sound half bad.

The neck on this one is called a Wizard Prestige, I think.
It’s not nearly as paper thin as the super wizard, which is on my 7 string.
From what I’ve read on jemsite, most guys feel that if the trem is properly setup, there isn’t much to worry about. The only way the trem studs could move is if you completely take the tension off. As long as you change strings one at a time there really isn’t a chance for the studs to move.
But yes, I looked at ibanezrules and he sells a set with all of the necessities for $45. I’ll cross that bridge when and if I need to.

Well, gtrjunior, you have me jonesing to take the JB / Jazz combo out of my dysfunctional King V (it needs a refret. I cannot afford for a few more months at least) and try em in the Ibanez..

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

I have a JB/JAZZ set in a RG2 with triple shot rings
I put that in everything

One set with rings in my Ehdwuld branded semi hollow
One set with rings for my Gibson Custom Studio that I still haven't installed
One set for my Dean shire that I probably wont put rings on,
Who am I kidding, I have a cream set of TS rings in the drawer

Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

JB/Jazz is a nice, well rounded set… Nothing wrong with it at all. I have them in my Westone.

In my RG3EXFM1 I replaced the V7/V8 trash stock pickups with GHS Dream 180s. I liked them so much that I put another set in one of my builds (and will probably do it again in the near future). They’re bright but not ice-pickish, and they’re VERY responsive to pick dynamics.

That’s all I got for ya…

Not yet, I’ve got a brass block and silent springs being delivered tomorrow.
I’m going to bring it to my local guy for the setup and other work.
I’m ok at tweaking a hard tail setup but not so good with a floater.

I listened to some vids of the jazz neck. It is a little bright but that might not be a bad thing. I’ve had a couple of pickups I had high hopes for sound muddy.
Namely tha PAF 36th, and bluesbucker. But I probably could have played with the heights a bit more if I’m being honest.
