Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Well, gtrjunior, you have me jonesing to take the JB / Jazz combo out of my dysfunctional King V (it needs a refret. I cannot afford for a few more months at least) and try em in the Ibanez..

I’m hoping you do try that pickup combo in your Ibby...

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

JB/Jazz is a nice, well rounded set… Nothing wrong with it at all. I have them in my Westone.

In my RG3EXFM1 I replaced the V7/V8 trash stock pickups with GHS Dream 180s. I liked them so much that I put another set in one of my builds (and will probably do it again in the near future). They’re bright but not ice-pickish, and they’re VERY responsive to pick dynamics.

That’s all I got for ya…

That’s all good info! Thank you my friend!
I’ve been curious about the gfs. I have heard a lot of good about them.

The sentient seems interesting too. A middle ground between the Jazz and 59.... hmmm
Funny thing though, I have one in my 7 string but it’s far from my favorite guitar. In fact is seldom play it. I need to check the wiring, something just doesn’t sound right with that guitar. The Nazgul in the bridge isn’t nearly as aggressive as I thought it would be. In fact it doesn’t sound much different than the Pegasus I took out of it.

That thing is really pretty. Did u fix the setup issues yet (sorry thread is too big for me to backtrack to see if you fixed her up yet at this point). How’s she feel?

No not yet. I have some parts on order. Might be another week or 2.

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Ah cool. I’m excited for you. Sucks that the seller lead you to believe it would arrive setup when it wasn’t. Looking forward to hearing your consensus, once she’s up and running.

Well, who knows. Maybe he tunes down to a low tuning. I tune a half step down. I’ll give him the benefit of he doubt. Besides everyone’s idea of an ideal setup is different.

How you set the Trem? Minor 3rd up, major 3rd bomb?

Yup, I did. Need a setup though and other misc upgrades.
Parts arrived today and I’ll drop the guitar off at my local shop this weekend.

Apparently im too lazy to spell lazy correctly... haha

At any rate thats really cool it arrived ok, curious to hear your thoughts once you get it back. What pups? String guage/tuning? I see you are pretty much in Eb, which is what i did for many years, now Im about 50/50 between E and Eb... I did put one in C# the night before cause I wanted to jam some Sabbath..
My 87 RG550 with an Evolution seemed to like E more so than any other tuning so I pretty much kept it there. I still need to get ya some pics of that too... been really busy lately... Congrats again, love the color!

So I got an FU-tone big brass block and a set of silent springs. I’ll have it set up in Eb with .09 gauge. I use .09 on Fender scale and .10 on Gibson scale.
As far as the pups, I have a JB going in the bridge.
I’m open to suggestions for the neck/middle spots so don’t be shy!!
I have a couple of guitars in standard tuning as well but I typically don’t usually go lower than that.

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

I only use a bridge pup so I cant really help ya there bro. Maybe a Jazz or 59N would be a classic setup...but with basswood, idk... Perhaps someone else can weigh in on that one...

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Ok!
Finally got the Ibby back yesterday. I had a chance to play it today for a little while.
The neck is SO comfortable. Playing the guitar is almost effortless. The upper fret access is ridiculous!
So far I have had zero tuning issues with the Edge Pro bridge. It holds tune ike a champ even with some fair whammy abuse. I’m not really a big trem bar user to begin with so this will be perfect for me.
I had a JB installed in the bridge...I’m not so sure I really like it tbh. I mean, yes it sounds just like every 80’s hair band guitar tone but the upper mid spike might be a little more than I want to hear. It sounds great when I hear Warren DiMartini playing it but I think I prefer the mids a little lower in the spectrum.
Maybe I’ve been playing Fokin pickups for so long that I’m just accustomed to that sound, which I LOVE. His pickups (at lest the models I use) have a present midrange but it’s a much warmer pickup than the JB.
I’ll keep the JB for a little while and see if it grows on me, if not I’ll be ordering my 5th set of Fokins!!

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Ive never heard of those pickups before but they sound interesting. Which model(s) are you using?

I tried many Duncans in my Ibanez over the years but to me they seemed best with an Evolution or a Breed. EMG-81’s sound good also, depends on what your into... Im about to swap an A2 into a JB here directly in a guitar I have coming and if not that I want to try an A2 Full Shred.
Clint has been telling me about these A6 mags that he has in a hybrid something or other he built and I think he said he had some extras of those so I might swap him something for those and give them a try.

Glad to hear your RG is treating you good, seems like a nice solid piece that Im sure will keep you busy. You gonna play that out, or just mess with it at home?

Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Oh yeah, I’m gigging with this guitar for sure.

I may try a mag swap in the JB too. Maybe something that can tame those mids a little. I’ll need to research a little. I don’t know a whole lot about magnets.

The Fokin pickups are amazing...
I use the “Hot Breeze” bridge and “Rocket Queen” neck. I think they probably most closely resemble the Custom Custom and Alnico Pro 2 from the Duncan lineup. Except the HB is an A5 magnet.

If you want to check out the website you will have to open it with google translate since it’s in Russian.
He speaks very good English and I have had no problem communicating with him through email. His prices are ridiculously good and shipping is only about 2 weeks or so.
High, HIGH quality product...

Here’s a short clip of my LP with the Fokin pups through the Quickrod.

Re: Incoming Ibanez day! (Damn you @Ascencion!!!)

Very cool, thank you I’ll definitely check into that!
I made a double screw TB-4 and had it in my basswood body 87 Charvel Model-3 with a ceramic magnet initially but it was way too bright so I put an A5 back in it and it sounded alot better. I want to try the double thick a5 and also an A8 I just got and go from there... its been my test mule the last two months for pickup, magnet swaps and hybrids... nice baseline to go from. Now how that would translate over to what a basswood Ibanez would want or like is another story. Ill let ya know how I react to them as I go.
