Incoming (limited edition SG content)

Was able to snag a [supposedly] mint used copy of one of these babies (which I have been lusting after since they were announced) for what I consider a very fair price.

Sparkling Burgundy Metallic '60s-style SG Special. It's an unheard of reissue color to me; this may actually be the only time they have reissued it. It was kind of like Gibson's closest equivalent to Candy Apple Red for just a couple of years back in the late '60's. It was a three-stage color, but the red dye of the translucent color coats was very unstable, so many, if not most, have faded to orange or copper metallic. I happen to have a '68 ES-330 in this color, so that makes the SG all that much more special to me. As far as I know, the color was used on ES-330s and ES-335s. I have never seen it on another model.

Any Special or Junior with a wraparound always piques my interest; the color just sent this one over the top for me.

The only changes I plan are a replacement of the stock nut with a scratch-made bone nut, and the replacement of the rear cavity cover with a "correct" smooth plastic one, instead of the weird pebbled one it comes with.

Congrats. Can't wait to see it. I have a special admiration for the sparkling burgundy as well. I have a '68 335 12 TDC that has faded in copper and the neck looks stunning as well.

Re: Incoming (limited edition SG content)

I wish it had the proper early SG Special neck pickup location (farther from the neck) and the inlaid Gibson logo instead of the decal...but for the price, I'll take it. I actually have had a pearloid Gibson inlay sitting here for years, and I might actually strip the headstock face, inlay it, and refinish over it.

P.S. My '68 330 is totally faded out as well. It would be really cool if the new version fades out too, but I doubt it will.

^^ I say you do it. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it, but it doesn't look quite right without it.

Congrats. I don't think I've ever seen that color on an SG. But it looks gorgeous. Especially with the small pickguard...I couldn't ever get along with the large one. Plus, P-90s and a wraparound. What's mor to ask for?!

Isn't the neck pup position in the photo the one further away from the neck that you are referring to?

Re: Incoming (limited edition SG content)

congrats...P90 + SG is like Western Virginia...or maybe West Virginia...

Re: Incoming (limited edition SG content)

Nice geetar! I have a 90's Gibson SG Special myself but not with P-90's which I think are awesome pick ups. You're sure to get your Pete Townshend Live @ Leeds splat sound galore.;)

Thanks. Wrapround bridge + one P90 or two P90s is my favorite setup for any Gibson. I'm all about Juniors and Specials. I have a modern Junior and a modern Special with stop tailpieces, and they are OK, but my Junior with the wraparound is superior in every way.

The neck pickup on this model is closer to the neck than it is on an old one from the '60s. I'm estimating 1/4 inch closer. You have to go to the Historic line to get a "correct" one, and even then, I'm not sure if they make an SG Special at the moment.

I noticed that it also needs a wide-bevel 5-ply guard, and it needs to be reshaped to follow the body contours on the lower bout. That plus the inlaid Gibson logo will do a lot for this already hot guitar.

Outstanding! It's nice to find a Holy Grail every once in a while.

Or maybe like "Country Roads." But I don't think John Denver used an SG on that song. :D

Anyway, sweet SG. Nice score.

Re: Incoming (limited edition SG content)

That is awesome. One sexy guitar. I love dual or single P-90 SG's. This is GAS I do not need right now. Wow. Makes me miss my SG Classic. My SG Junior helps keep it all at bay.
