Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

Found a pretty good deal on Marshall JCM800 2203x in fairly good shape. I've always heard positive things and especially during the 80's rock that I love.

So give me the lowdown on this thing?!?!

Oh here are the pics..

And hopefully it will be here before the weekend!!!

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

whoa!

I had one of those 2203 marshall heads and a 412 marshall cab

LOUD AS HELL!!! Sounded horrible cause not much gain and screeched, and I could not turn it up loud enough so all I got was static preamp pedal sounds.

I did not know about hotplates, I recommend one for that amp when you play your country western crook tele through it :)

I plan on using my Les paul through this one!

Great score, but If you are not prepared to get that master up at least 1/2 expect thin buzzy tone. 2/3 is better. They are meant to run full throttle.

A good attentuator, or a large concert venue are recommended accesories for old 100w Marshalls.

LOL! That's the first time I've ever heard a venue as being an accessory. I'd love to get an 800 but I don't have anywhere where I can really open it up and I hate attenuators. If I grabbed one, it would have to be a 2204 50 watt model. Still loud as hell, but you can get power tube distortion a little easier. If I'm not mistaken, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you pull the middle set of tubes and get a similar result on these? As far as shear volume goes, there's only something like 3db difference between a 50 and 100 watt head, but the lower wattage does help you get some power tube break up sooner.

Not really... You can pull the middle set of tubes then you have to halve your ohms setting for your cab it sounds like pewp its nothing like actually having a 50 watt amplifier. Your better off looking for lower sensitivity speakers that will make a larger difference than going from a 100 watt to 50 watt amp. I have 3 800's 2 are modded 1 isnt. The unmodded one just sits.

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

My JMP 2204 was extremely loud, nearly as loud as the 2203, and Laney 100w head I had. It was substantially louder than the 50w Jackson (ghost built by Laney) I owned. It defintely opens up sooner, but the 50s sound a bit different full throttle than the 100w heads do too.

At any rate, they all need enough volume to get you in trouble with the neighbors and local authorities. I got a couple visits from the Fairfax County Police in my younger days :)

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

That's the one, right there. Enjoy it LOUD. I miss mine immensely!

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

I have a 50 watter... And while yes it does sound better live, I honestly have no trouble getting a decent tone at 'bedroom' levels. Maybe it's because mine runs old 6550s or maybe it's just I have a 'warm' one... Or maybe my idea of good tone sucks lol.

My Egnater Seminar hot rodded version has an easier volume knob to deal with, but it's not as raw and rawk as my stock 800. With a SD-1 you can do anything with that amp.

Yours will have el-34s. I actually prefer the 6550s, but either way it's a classic for a reason! Cuts like butter and can sing like a fat lady if you know how to use it!

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

Not much gain, needs a boost for the 80's tones you're thinking of. Great tone foundation though.

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

I have a JCM800 4010 50w 1x12 combo. For home volumes I actually preferred it to a blackstar HT5. I use a ts9 close and or a mxr D+ to boost it.

Re: Incoming NAD!!! my first Marshall!!

Congratulations, great score!

I'm with xxxplorer on this - I've never had a problem getting a tone I like out of MV Marshalls at low volume. Yes they sound better when the power tubes are sweating, and there is a sweet spot at around 6-7 on the master volume, but they are usable at lower volumes, even bedroom volume.

For playing at home I don't find there is any advantage in using an attenuator. It doesn't sound any better to me than the pre-amp distortion. Where attenuators work well with these amps is in running the amp at the sweet spot (6-7) and using the attenuator to lower the volume to a suitable level for band rehearsals and small gigs (i.e. drum kit level).

For 80s rock/metal you probably will want to boost the front end with a pedal. For late 70s AC/DC & Thin Lizzy style crunch the amp alone will be awesome.

Enjoy!

Hmmm, calls himself CrookTele, has a Les Paul and a badass Marshall :scratchch
