Incoming NAD.. What OD pedal plays nice with a VHT Pitbull?

I still can't believe I did this, but I used my tax money and ordered a used, VHT Pitbull 50CL, last night. I know it doesn't seem like much, but I have wanted this amp or a Mesa, Mark 4 or 5, for a very long time now. It's one of my holy grail amps, if you know what I mean.

I can't tell you much about it yet, because it's not here yet, but I do have a question for the VHT/Fryette, informed inividuals.

What would be a good Overdrive for an amp like this?

I've played one a few times, but was never able to experiment with ODs at all. And with these amps being so touch sensitive and articulate, I don't really know where to start my search. What will play nice with this type of amp?

To answer the question. I just feel like it needs a little bit more gain. It may have more than I realize.

An overdrive for what? Boost?
I've haven't tried one with mine, never felt the need.

Well, you seem to be the guy to talk to.

Does it really have that much gain? And, How much does the tube rectifier/ss switch alter the gain, like they say? I've only spent a couple minutes here and there playing with a Pitbull, I just know I really liked them. I couldn't pass up the price I paid for this one.

The one I played didn't need one at all. That amp is tight and articulate without being steril. It is a bit 'dry' and your mistakes come out... But it'll make you play better. Some high gain amps can be a bit loose... This isn't one.

I may just need to play with it for a few days and learn it. It may very well be that dryness that I have to get used to.

I had the 45 combo and I never used an od, I loved it with delay though...amazing amp...AMAZING!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your acquisition.

I don't know about the model you bought, but the Ultralead has copious amounts of gain that never gets fizzy, muddy or out of control. The whole dial is usuable. I like just running straight in with hot pickups and a tight 4x12.

I would wait until you have the amp. Play with it for a while then see what you may need to do to goose it

Yours is a little different than mine. You have the Ultra Lead. It has more gain on tap than the CL.

I think that's what I'm going to do. The problem is, I still have to wait until tuesday for it to arrive. I hate waiting for shipping. I have no patience for this.

UL or CL it still has a lot of gain on tap so you likely won't need an OD of any kind but if you do look for something with a tweakable EQ section.

VHT amps tend to be very focused in the high end and that makes them not so OD friendly with a lot of pedals.

This is all IMHO and YMMV...

+1 try what you have, its free! and it might be perfect as is.

guitarists love to tinker, cant resist another gadget... I see the youtube videos with the death metal amps and a green OD, I think why???

Re: Incoming NAD.. What OD pedal plays nice with a VHT Pitbull?

Sometimes an amp may not need a boost, but the player prefers the resulting sound of the amp with gain dialed back then boosted, instead of relying on the amps gain alone.
Boosting a JCM 800 is different than boosting a 5150, one needs the extra push, the other doesn't but sounds better to some players than simply driving the on board gain really high.

I have talked with some Pittbull owners who agree that the amps doesn't need any added gain, but state they desire a bit more saturation in the gain so add an OD pedal to use in conjunction to get that sound/feel. I can see that, but I don't do it myself because I like the amp's unique sound. I have other amps that do the ultra compressed and saturated high gain sound. So the Pittbull stands on its own just fine for me.
But by all means give it a shot, it could lead to your perfect sound.

Yeah, I'm just gonna learn the amp first. I know this is a different beast than what I'm used to.

I can't help but feel like a giddy little school girl. It makes my stomach flip over, everytime I think that I actually own a Pitbull. Just get here already!...
