Incoming SD Iommi

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

It's a way better guitar than I am a player. The pickups are definitely aggressive, but in low gain, low volume they're really bluesy. The differences between the 2 versions aren't subtle. Off the top of my head:

Cross inlays go the full length of the neck instead of just to #12
Ebony fretboard vs rosewood
Chrome hardware and pickups vs black
4 ply black and white pickguard vs all black
Output jack on the side vs traditional front mounting

It's a great guitar.

The newer model definitely looks better. Sounds like it would be the one to go with.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

If you see either for a good price I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

Got around to putting the Iommi in my Epi SG-400 today and I'm digging it. Sounded good through my mesa 50 cal+ which can be brutal on the highs, but the Iommi's highs were punchy not piercing, still there but didn't take my head off. The lows and mids are definitely there with a nice chunk to them and the lows are neither overly tight or loose kind of a goldilocks thing going on where they were just right and sounded good for both older Sabbath stuff and thrashier stuff like Slayer and Kill 'em all.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

I have one of the newer Iommi SGs.

Yummy pic bump.
"That's" an Epi?

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

I always dug his Patrick Eggle signature guitar. That deal ended when Gibson offered him a deal. But I like the looks of the Eggle better.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

Was your C8 a C5 with a new magnet?

I have received my custom 5 and 59 neck but just have not been able to get them installed in my Epi SG 400 as of yet.

It started out as a Custom custom. I bought a Custom but the custom custom is what showed up so I just put a ceramic mag in it to make it it Custom, which is a really nice pickup. Then I put an A8 mag in it later to sweeten up the highs a little, also a great pickup. I've never tried the custom 5 but have read good things about them and SG's.

That set should sound pretty sweet in your SG.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

I ran a C8 in my Epi g400 when I had it .. awesome!! Randy, yeah, the Epi Iommi looks pretty killer on paper.. Yet to play one in person. The inlays may be a deal breaker for some, but the pups are upgraded with Gibson Iommis, IIRC the body is a tiny bit thicker and the coolest feature to me is the input jack is side mounted. 24 frets and supposedly only 2,000 made. Epi is making some good guitars these days and it seems like these special models are a step up even..

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

Not sure why someone would want lower case t's on their guitar. I guess if your name is Tony it would work :jester:

Yeah the custom and custom 8 were both great pickups in the SG and i'm really liking the Iommi too. So many good choices for these guitars. I bet the C8 is going to be pretty nice in my explorer.

A thicker bodied Sg with a side jack would be pretty sweet, not sure I would need/use the 2 extra frets

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

Tony's thoughts on the 2 extra frets was that there is room. He was told for years by Gibson that they couldn't do it (there was plenty of room), so he went with companies like Jay Dee and Patrick Eggle. Then Gibson came to their senses and realized they left this $100 bill on the ground and started to work with him. Funny thing is, he rarely uses those high frets. You hear them once in awhile in his solos, but his thin strings allow some serious bending.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

Yeah the neck pickup doesn't get moved for the extra frets like on a les paul, so no harm no foul there. I guess you can down tune and keep your higher notes that way. I've read that 24 fret guitars were Iommi's idea. Never looked into it to see if he was actually the first to use them but if he says he came up with the idea that's good enough for me.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

His custom Jay Dee and John Birch guitars had 24 frets in the early/mid 70s, and I don't recall seeing any before that. He certainly made it popular. But yes, it works better on an SG, as there is already room.

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

Would love to have one of the Jaydee Iommi guitars. Sadly they have run out of stock of the schaller 456 bridges so now you have to get it with a different bridge setup

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

I have 2 456s solely for when I find the right P90s equipped SG. I'm not even really sure how I ended up with 2...

Re: Incoming SD Iommi

I don't think it's wrong that the Epi feels better than the Gibson. I bought my first Epi over a Gibson 25 years ago. The Epi played better, couldn't tell the difference with pickups with the Gibson designed and overall just felt better! The $500 price tag was also way better than the $3000 for the Gibson. I've still got the guitar.
I picked up a series 1 Epi Iommi SG years back. Although it plays like a dream, I was never really hooked on the pickups (Epi used the same Gibson Iommi pickups in that model). For the amount of turns (impedance I think was in the 16-17K mark), they sure sounded muddy and not much output for what I was expecting. My idea of Sabbath tone is the first couple of albums which he was using P90's, a treble booster and Marshalls. Towards the 80's, the sound became a bit - blahhh. So to me, the tone is a PAF style pickup, treble booster and a Marshall or Laney. Plugging the Iommi straight into a Marshall just didn't cut it for me - so the guitar sits in it's case until I could find something to bring it to life. Being that they're humbucker size, makes it an easy swap when I find the right pickup. On the downside, being humbucker size - it's not mini humbucker size to look the part!
I think what most people forget (new signature models included) is that the pickups themselves in the JDs were about mini-humbucker size (regardless of the magnet configs). That does shape the tone too.
Those JD's look awesome and I bet they sound as good. $3000 pound price tag is a killer just to sound like Tony. Think I might do some work in the shed and knock up a replica myself!
I've seen the new Iommi Epi's and they look nice and price isn't too bad. But those silver pickups!
