Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

Has anyone played one of these yet? It seems to be getting good reviews. Looks interesting for that price.

Edit: I just noticed - they may not even be in stores yet. :smack:

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

Ehh, well....the clip for the dist. was pretty bad in that small practice amp icepick sorta way. The clean was good though.

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

Yeah, I agree. The "clean" is mostly what I'm interested in. I wonder how it would sound with the Tubulator?

Ah, the tubulator. Well with it, who cares bout the second channel, it's all you really need! If you don't care about the gain, i say go for it.

If you lived near, sure. Hughes and Kettner has some of the best cleans, and mine sparkle. I just wish I had a mic good enough to capture it!

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

Another H & K to look at is the edition tube 20. Great mid sized amp (20watts through 1x12). Has the best cleans ive ever played. The od is good, but can get real grainy, all you need is a nice od in front of it to make it amazing though. I use a tubescreamer in front of mine and couldn't be happier. Im probably going to be selling it towards the end of summer to get a decent tube head to put on top of my Splawn when it arrives.

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

I have not played the Edition Blue 15, but I did try its slightly bigger 30 watt brother once, and its predecessor (the Edition Silver). At that size, it's definitely not a bad amp. The drive channel of the 30 watt version was pretty nice, a very open and airy distortion tone with good definition.

They should be readily available in stores, it's been around for well over two years by now I think.

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

The tube 20's and such are fantastic, but can't be had for $139. (made in Germany? China?) As for the OD clip, I blame the clip maker. H&K has always had a good solid OD, and I imagine this amp does NOT sound as squeaky and boxy as the soundclip makes it sound. It's probably real responsive, and would take the almighty tubulator famously. One thing I can tell from that OD clip is that if you backed the gain down and put the tubulator in there, it would probably be great, too, not just into the clean channel.

Germany. But they're fairly unknown, and can be found at pretty low prices at times! Maybe not at 139, but not much more IIRC.

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

No I realize all the Tube series are German, I'm wondering if the $139 Edition Blue 15 is still German.

No, it's Asian. I don't know what country, but it's definitely Asian.

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

Hey I just played one at a store tonight. It's great, and definitely worth the money. Also, as I expected, the MF sound clip for the overdrive is total crap! The amp can do lots of different styles of overdrive, and it can get real thick. I could tell the way it was driving that the Tubulator (or any other traditional OD/booster for that matter) would be a great addition to the rig.

By the way, they're all made in Vietnam! That was kind of a shocker, not from a geo-political standpoint or anything, but because it's not the first place (or even top 10) that you think of regarding amps or consumer electronics manufacturing.

Anyway it's a great amp. Another thing I noticed is that the midrange knob was AWESOME! When you raised it up, it was a very thick, smooth, and broad midrange boost, and really kicked up the low midrange meatiness. It wasn't the undesirable screechy midrange boost usually found on cheapo amps. In addition, cutting the midrange did not sound hollow and unnatural. There were several tone knob positions that were dogs, so you have to tune in all three knobs in concert with eachother, but it really is a cool little amp. The store had others, like with FX for $179, and I think there were some with 12" speakers, but I only plugged into the little guy. Clean was obviously great, too.

Re: Inexpensive Hughes and Kettner.

Thanks Frank. Great review. I can't believe that in a town this big, there's no H & K dealer for me to try one out. I'm going to snag one for sure now. I notice that MF updated their "availability" tag from "due 08-16-06" to "average deliver is 32 days". :yell:

They must be popular.
