Influence of the Slug coil

My Custom Custom is a bit uneven in my HSS Strat, with the slug coil about 1/32 or so higher than the screw coil. This was an installation goof on my part, must be something wrong with my crappy homemade HB rout.

So is the slug coil influencing my tone in this case.?
Or is the screw coil the only meaningful part of the sound. To my ears 1/32 makes a difference in pickup adjustments, in general.

thanks

Re: Influence of the Slug coil

I believe the slugs are stronger than the screws. That's why the screws are adjustable.

I don't know about 1/32, but 1/16 definitely makes a difference in my ear.

I would adjust the screws and see if that helps. They may look funny if they have to be up high, but you can fix that next time you restring.

You mean your pup is tilted? In most cases the hookup cable pushes one side up. Cure: more even layout under the pickguard, stronger springs and some foam/cotton under the pup. Its a little friggin and takes some runs to get it straight.

Re: Influence of the Slug coil

I've installed a HB in a guitar and the slug coil was a bit far than the screws, so it sounded weak. To me it seemed that it wasn't important, but it is definitively. So I would recommend that you set the pickup parallel to the strings, then adjust the screws to fingerboard radius, that is very important too, you'll see your tone will improve.

Both coils are very important, they're out of phase to cancel the noise, but both coils need to send the string vibration so that you have coil1 + coil2 , if one coil gets less string info, it's like having 1 coil functioning and just the other coil canceling the hum.

Hope that helps

Re: Influence of the Slug coil

You might want to leave it as is. You get more mids and beef with the slug coil stronger.

Re: Influence of the Slug coil

i had that problem with my VHPAF in my Ibanez RT, i forgot about it and i had to rewire somthing so i took it off and put the pickguard back on and i apparently arranged the wires to not make it do it anymore, now it sounds better lol

!!!

well I just got done fixing it

I think with the beef in my Rivera and the Custom Custom, plus the graphtech saddles, I'm doing well there.
I found the problem, which was the tiny soldered/taped wires coming from my Dimarzio VV middle pickup. They were compressed under the humbucker in an odd way and were causing the tipping :drive:

Re: Influence of the Slug coil

which dimarzio vv is it? sorry for the hijack

its OK my question is solved !

THe Dimarzio is the Virtual vintage DP401,

I don't know if they make it anymore. I can't remember its name other that the model number.
Either way, I picked it because it had the lowest possible output

Re: Influence of the Slug coil

I have played guitars where you could rock the pickup back and forth and hear the difference as the coils got closer/farther away. I guess that is what the screw coil is for. With Gibson type neck angles, it may be more of a problem. ;)
