Info on NYC Bass set

There's hardly anything on the NYC Bass pickups. Not many reviews. Not many youtube videos (and most of them have terrible sound quality, or use too much slapping to get an idea of how they would sound more the way I play). Not many people excited about it.
Does that mean something? (I.e., are they secretly terrible?)

Some questions:
1. Do they really sound like J-Bass pickups in single coil mode?
2. Does anyone particularly hate them? or find them boring?
3. Has anyone put them in a shortscale?
4. Of all the possibilities, what are your favorites?
I'd want want dual and single coil action. Would I miss out omitting the series/parallel options?
5. What values should I use for pots with these pickups? 500K? 1Meg?

My style:
  • I play punk, postpunk, and a lot of gooey new wave. I gig a lot and tour sometimes.
  • I like my basslines to be melodic and interesting while functioning as the bass.
  • I don't slap, but I do like to use octaves in a funky way.
  • I mostly use a pick, but sometimes I'll go with fingers.
  • I value clarity. I would rather sound "hi-fi" than vintage if the sound is more clear.
  • I use pedals: compressor, overdrive, fuzz, lots of chorus, flanger, and delay (mostly for slap back).
  • I play a 4-string Hagstrom HB-4 with humbuckers that split to singles. I'll have to make body modifications if I want to make the switch, since the pickups are different sizes.
  • Speaking of switches, are there 6-way rotary switches that would give me all 3 humbucker positions and all 3 single positions?

Your most thoughtful responses from NYC users are appreciated.

I have used them, and split, it sounds like a J bass to me. But I have only used them in a 34" and 35" scale. I've used them with 500k pots, and the split and series options were my favorite, although I only tried the parallel once. I use a pick about half the time.

Cool. But do you like them? Since you no longer use them, does that mean you do not prefer them?

What kind of soapbox-sized pickups do you prefer? I know you work for SD, but you can tell me the truth. ;)

I play Antiquity IIs on my Jaguar, so it's not like I'm dissing SDs here.

Well, I sold the bass I had them in...it wasn't the pickups I didn't like, but the feel of the bass. I really liked the pickups.

Re: Info on NYC Bass set

So I pulled the trigger on the NYC4 set. I had surgery done to my bass: cuts to the body and the pickguard were made to accommodate the pickup size. I connected the pickups to my 6-way rotary switch for humbucking and single coil options.

The six sounds are unique and interesting. I'm very pleased with my decision. The end.
