Inspiration for a nautical themed guitar

I keep talking (mainly to myself) about a nautical themed guitar. I love the look of that bluish green worn off boat paint. I doubt I'm good enough to do up a mock version, but I'd love to incorporate the feel of the below pictures into a nautical type worn strat guitar. Something simple like a strat body with one humbucker, one knob, maple neck. It'd be awesome if it looked like it was put together with old planks (possibly an airbrush trick?) Maybe an anchor for 12th fret dot marker or something. I'm not sure if it would have a picture of an octopus, or some type of sucker marks from its tentacles (or both).

Cool idea! I think a Strat or Tele with this type of finish would look awesome! +1 For the anchor 12th fret marker. Also, I think a roasted maple neck would look awesome with the worn finish. Cool idea, I dig it!

Re: Inspiration for a nautical themed guitar

A friend of mine once took a bunch of printed comic strips, and basically used a water based glue to wallpaper his Peavey T-60.

A more careful application of the same idea would work well with any pic your printed out...

My personal favorite idea: Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa

Just the coloring/relicing–one pickup and an all maple neck :) This body was done by a local guy I use a lot, Frank Verrilli, his relic work is awesome but his all natural wood/oil finishes are the best.

Re: Inspiration for a nautical themed guitar

I spent high school and college summers in a boatyard working on yachts, cleaning, painting, refinishing them. I have a design laid out in my head that I haven't been able to get around to yet, but it's based off these classic mahogany hulled boats with teak decks

I'd like to get a mahogany guitar body and route lines in a chevron V pattern to mimic the seams on a boat's deck then pain inside the routed seams like this

Then go to a boat store and find other ways to decorate the guitar- maybe boat cleats as strap buttons.

If using mahogany you could go to a boat store and use the same varnishes and oils used on the boats to mat it authentic

I keep telling my brother that if I ever get a custom guitar it's going to be naval camo with anchor inlays as a tribute to his time in the military.

Check out Martin's website for their latest special edition "Dreadnought". Now THAT'S nautical!

Close, but more of the color, less of the wood. But same principal I'd say.

Yeah, and if I'm following you correctly that blue is probably a little darker than you had in mind. But I really like the overall concept!
