Well I finally got a Pearly Gates Neck pup and put it in my Wolfgang special today. And you know one of the stereotypes, or plus’s depending on how you look at it, of SD’s vs. Dimarzio pups seems to be very true. That SD’s let the character of the guitar come through instead of the sound of the pup. I always felt that basswood guitars have a very soft round undefined bass response and that’s exactly what I heard with the PG. I have had an Air Norton and Paf Pro in the neck and liked certain things about each pup but never satisfied with either. But I never heard the sound of the guitar unplugged come out when I plugged in, until today. Makes me wish that the guitar was made of alder or something else with a more even acoustic response. But as it stands since I’m not going to sell the guitar, it was a Christmas present from my Wife and Daughters, I will have to get used to the new tone I have. It really cuts through the TV noise when I’m playing on the couch at home *grin* It will be fun to see what the PGB trembucker sounds like when it comes in. I was also happy to see that one of my worries about the length of the legs was unnecessary. The SD pups legs were noticeably shorter then the Dimarzio’s I was taking out, about 1/8 of an inch from eyeballing it. So after grinding down the tabs it went in without a problem. I did swap out the screw pole pieces out of a Tone Zone I had lying around so the SD would mount flush on the tabs. All in all a very satisfying experience and a fresh new sound to wrap my ears around. When I get the PGb I will post some clips.
