Installed a PGn today

Well I finally got a Pearly Gates Neck pup and put it in my Wolfgang special today. And you know one of the stereotypes, or plus’s depending on how you look at it, of SD’s vs. Dimarzio pups seems to be very true. That SD’s let the character of the guitar come through instead of the sound of the pup. I always felt that basswood guitars have a very soft round undefined bass response and that’s exactly what I heard with the PG. I have had an Air Norton and Paf Pro in the neck and liked certain things about each pup but never satisfied with either. But I never heard the sound of the guitar unplugged come out when I plugged in, until today. Makes me wish that the guitar was made of alder or something else with a more even acoustic response. But as it stands since I’m not going to sell the guitar, it was a Christmas present from my Wife and Daughters, I will have to get used to the new tone I have. It really cuts through the TV noise when I’m playing on the couch at home *grin* It will be fun to see what the PGB trembucker sounds like when it comes in. I was also happy to see that one of my worries about the length of the legs was unnecessary. The SD pups legs were noticeably shorter then the Dimarzio’s I was taking out, about 1/8 of an inch from eyeballing it. So after grinding down the tabs it went in without a problem. I did swap out the screw pole pieces out of a Tone Zone I had lying around so the SD would mount flush on the tabs. All in all a very satisfying experience and a fresh new sound to wrap my ears around. When I get the PGb I will post some clips.

...Congrats!!! ...Can't wait to hear the clips.

Wanna be even more surprised/pleased? Split that PGn. I have used the PGn in a lot of guitars, but I just installed on in my PRS with a tap and holy smokes is that some killer tone.

Re: Installed a PGn today

I tried that out while I was searching for the solder. Of course I had to try out the pup before I found it and the wires kept coming apart. I notice a big drop in volume but a very nice split tone. I need to get one of the 3 way toggles so that I can wire up the guitar like John Petrucci’s Ibanez and Music man signature guitars are where the middle position is both pup’s split.

I'm not getting any volume drop. I'm using regular Les Paul style 3-way toggle volume/volume (no tone pots) with the neck pot being a push/pull for the split.

Re: Installed a PGn today

Well I got the drop when the white and red wire came apart. I'm sure thats not the way to proplerly split the pup but it sounded pretty good clean. I don't want to put another switch in the wolf so I will have to get the special 3 way toggle.

Re: Installed a PGn today

How would you compare that pickup in terms of the '59 neck?? I'd like to try the PGn at some point.

Re: Installed a PGn today

Which coil are you guys leaving on when you split the PGN? Because one coil is hotter than the other...the PG uses unbalanced coils.

I guess I should be asking you Lew how to hook up the 2 weaker coils to type of toggle switch John Petrucci has in his guitars. And where can I get one. There used to be one on the dimarzio site but I cant find it anymore.

I don't know anything about what John Petrucci does on his guitars, but replacing a tone pot with a push/pull pot with a DP/DT switch is no big deal if you want to split the coils properly. Is that what you want to do?

You could split both pickups with one push/pull pot as the switch is actually two independent switches (one on each side) but both are activated when you push or pull on the knob.

If it was me, I'd determine which of the two coils is strongest and then rewire the guitar to leave that single coil on. I'd also make it the coil facing the neck so it's in the same position as a neck pickup on a Strat.

I think I found one at allparts.

EP 4362-000 4-Pole Toggle Switch (12 Terminals

But it says it costs 24 dollars :smack: Seems a bit expensive for a toggle switch.

Can you split both pups using just one tone or volume knob? do you need a special kind of push pull pot? , because Ive got a custom split in the bridge which sounds good but does that mean you can only have both pickups split at the same time or one and not the other?
