flank,

You got too much goin' on there my friend. Slap a set of Antiquity Texas Hots & Custom bridge and you will be in TONE HEAVEN. I am, every day.
My .02 FWIW.

Yeah, I've heard that! Need to pick me one up one of these days. I feel that way about the Ant. Custom bridge. From what I've played, heard & read the Antiquities (all of 'em) & the Twanger are some of the best out there. What do you like so much about the Banger (never played one, just inquiring). Can you compare it to the Ant. Custom, if you'v played it? Good luck with the MAGIC :saeek: formula.

Peace,

Darrin

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

well, to be honest, the twangbanger isnt too nice through bright amps......... but if you play something that has warm/smoothish overdrive and warm clean tones.....its unbelievable......... i actually love it alot more for CLEANS than anything else......and i never thought i would say that about a strat bridge pickup he he.......but its true for me anyways

it can sound much like a tele, cept id say only about 50% there, but it still gets very close

check out my sound "harmonic twangbanger" and it shows off the sweet clean tones of the twangbanger through my fender super 112

as for the Surfer neck, i think im startin to dig it he he

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

what is it you dont like about the surfer? i love the twangbanger/aps combo! the twangbanger doesnt nail a tele sound but gives your strat bridge a nice broadcaster mid punch.

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

Flank, I've got to wonder if the alnico 5 Surfer is compatable with the alnico 2 APS-2 and Twangbanger. The Surfer would be a lot glassier and have less mids and less chunk to the tone than those other two. I could see how it'd be difficult to dial in one tone on my amp that would bring out the best in all three of those pickups.

If you make a change, I'd suggest putting an APS-2 in the neck position and saving the Surfer for another guitar with a Surfer middle pickup.

The Surfer neck and middle are my favorite strat pickups for doing the clean chording thing...Overall,I still favor my American Deluxe strat that has the complete set of Texas Hots...

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

idk, i think i definately like the APS in the middle......... but the past 2 pickups ive tried in the neck spot, the Fender custom shop 69, and the Surfer....... seem kinda round and polite......its not very edgy or lively, perhaps its just the lack of mids? they dont really have alot of spank and really hollow sound

idk, im wondering if i need something a little overwound in the neck spot? cause ive kinda felt like switching to the neck position gets kinda polite and not enough authority......

any ideas guys?

None. :burnout:

Your experience is the opposite of mine. The Antiquity Surfer is one of the livliest, edgiest, strongest vintage style Strat neck pickups I've ever heard!

Try an APS-2 in the neck I guess. But it's not as lively or edgey as a Surfer! :laugh2: Chunkier, smoother and thicker though...I use the APS-2/Twangbanger set in one of my favorite Strats.

perhaps i need somethin a tad more than "vintage"?......thats maybe what im thinkin

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

One of the best neck pickups I've heard is the Fender Fat 50's neck. Out of all the
A-5 strat pickups out there, the Fat 50's have the most beef. More 'texasy' than Texas Specials, and without the honky mids.

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

I have a pair of SSL-1s (neck and RWRP middle) and a Twangbanger in an alder/maple Strat with vintage hardware. They seem to blend together just fine, with a little extra beef in the B/M position, and a lot of extra beef in the bridge of course. It still sounds like a Strat to me -- the Tele influence is pretty limited to my ears, but it's a good tone in its own right. I have the bottom tone control wired to the bridge pup with the middle pup left wide open. It may be that the issue you're facing has more to do with the mismatch between neck and middle than between neck and bridge.
Good luck sorting it out.

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

i think im going to exchange the surfer for a Texas Hot........do you guys think it will be a better match? i think the surfer sounds good, but there is just something missing what i switch to it

Re: Installed Ant II SUrfer strat neck

it sounds to me like you wanr more top end, not less. have you tried a ssl1?

Jeremy, I think the SSL-1 and Surfer are sort of similar. Both are on the glassy side of things and Flank has chunky, full sounding alnico 2 pickups for the middle and bridge.

Flank, if I were you, I'd just go for another APS-2 so the set is all alnico 2. That's the set I use with the Twangbanger and it is very balanced, fat and chunky. But still gets a great, bubbley Strat tone.

But I guess the Texas Hot neck would work well too...it's also alnico 2 and has that thick, plucky, chewy tone...similar to the APS-2 but the poles are raised and staggered...not flat.

If you really are looking for a brighter neck pickup (and not another APS-2) I don't think you'll find a better one than the Surfer that you already have.

Sorry to hijack, but whats the difference between the staggered (APS-1) and the flat (APS-2) pickups. Are they that different?

I think so! IMO, the flatter polepieces give a thicker tone and the raised polepieces have a brighter, sizzlier, glassier tone.

It's subtle...but evident if you compare them side by side.

Flatter polepieces allow moving the whole bobbin closer to the strings and that fattens and thickens up the tone, IMO.
