Insuring your Guitars and Amps

Just a note, I got a nice rider onto my homeowner's policy for an extra 70 bucks to cover up to $20K in gear. Even if it is stolen out of my car, I lose it, someone breaks into my home, a hurricane hits, you name it.

You guys might want to look into it if you have some nice stuff to protect.

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

yeah, mine is covered under homeowners.... the tricky part is getting a value for vintage stuff. But its defintely a good idea if you've got alot of gear (between family members, we've got 10 guitars and 4 amps.)

Does that still apply if you're playing out and someone steals your stuff from the venue or something along those lines?

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

Fatty, apparently it does. I have a $1000 deductable on my homeowners though, so it'd have to be one of my better guitars before I'd file a claim. I asked every type of question I could regarding "what if?" and the only thing I can come up with was intentional abuse. So, no Pete Townsend stuff, but it appears just about everything else goes.

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

I have a separate policy for my gear. It's through Farm Bureau and they said that regular homowners wouldn't cover it completely and that's why the separate policy. All what itfs are taken care of.

I also have a seperate policy for ALL my gear. I have documented every piece in writing to my insurance carrier, and when my gear changes I try to update this annually. I pay about 120. for this!

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

I use MusicPro Insurance, theough ASCAP (but anyone can get it). It offers full replacement value, anywhere the gear is in the world. Much better than homeowners.

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

I have an instant anti-steal visual insurance only: a crowbar. Its appearance indicates that: one bad glance with a bad purpose at it and its arrival is assured ;)

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

Take note: awhile back, somebody broke into my car and stole a small duffel full of guitar goods. I assumed that auto insurance would cover it, since I had full coverage as well as several optional add-ons and a zero deductible.

I was kindly informed by State Farm that stolen goods from a vehicle that are not an inherent part of said vehicle (e.g. stereo, speakers) are not covered by vehicle insurance. Instead they are covered by homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance. Most renters don't have a policy, and will be screwed in this situation. Also, getting paid for a claim on stolen goods is quite a bit more involved than getting an auto claim settled. Who keeps receipts for CDs? Anyway, just keep in mind that anything you keep in your car won't be covered if somebody breaks in, steals the car, etc. by auto insurance alone.

Re: Insuring your Guitars and Amps

I was under the impression that Homeowner's insurance won't cover your gear if you get paid for playing out. I'll have to doublecheck that since it's been four years since I asked.

My insurance company would not cover gear used for paying gigs and wanted an outrageous amount for a separate policy. I'm insured through MusicPro instead.

I have a policy with them as well, but I barely got above the deductible, because they stole a bag full of crap. Thought I'd try to get some of that back through State Farm. No dice.

EDIT: By the way, if memory serves, MusicPro's premiums are $10 per $1,000 insured.

This is very true. I have all of my gear insured at a $1,000 deductible. My premium is a bit more like $100 a year, but I think that is because I live in CT.

It is a good idea in case someone comes through your home looking for the five-finger special.
