Interesting effect of Kahler Flyer tremolo.

Once again, I decided to swap p'ups around, trying to find what I like best. ;)

My Predator and Patriot are basically the same guitar, except the Predator has a Kahler Flyer tremolo and locking nut. I took the entire Predator pickguard assembly, (complete with matching 59's), and moved it over to the Patriot. Then I put the Patriot pickgaurd assembly in the Predator, but with its original 59n/C5b combo.

Here's the wierd part, the same 59 combo that sounded mellow and sweet in the Kahler, is now bright and shrill in the Patriot. I have to turn the tone control down to 5 or 6 for the Patriot to be usable. I can come to no other conclusion than the Kahler was really killing a lot of mids and high-end off the 59's. (The Patriot is a fixed bridge, btw.)

On a side note - I'm glad to have the 59/C5 back in the Predator. It really sounds good in there. I guess I'll have to "fiddle" with the tone cap in the Patriot to see if I can make it more managable. Either that, or put the 59's into a different guitar.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

My dear sweet wife just popped her head in, and said, "Did you get it fixed?"

If you tear something apart, and replace parts, it must be broke. :laugh2:

Actually, in a roundabout way, thats what I'm saying above. The 59's were sweet and rich with the Kahler. They're too bright and piercing without it.

On the other hand, the 59's in the Patriot, with the tone anywhere from 0 to 5, and with a fair amount of compression and "dirt" - sounds killer. Its like the Kahler completely changed the personality of the 59's.

BTW - the Kahler equipped guitar still has a 59 in the neck. ;)

Mine has a Super Distortion and a pair of singles.

I've never found a normal Strat that gives that tone. It's not exactly your classic Strat tone, but it's a good tone none the less.

That´s actually one of the quirks of a Kahler, is that the tonal change vs. Hardtail is practically the exact opposite of a Floyd ;)

Re: Interesting effect of Kahler Flyer tremolo.

thats pretty interesting actually. Both of the guys in Slayer swear by Kahlers and hate Floyds, that might be why they Crank their mids so much.
