I was casually looking for a new 4x12 today and thinking about buying a guitar for no real good reason except that I love to buy guitars for no real good reason :laugh2:
Think I am going to get a Marshall 1960 bottom used, seems like a good deal for a little over $400 in excellent shape.
Now onto the guitars
Went to Sam Ash, who are obviously on the balls of their ass, and they had nothing but a few poorly cared for new Gibsons that were silly in price. (They did have one nice DC TV Special which I think Bludave has his eye on, very nice). Shame that a giant is really falling down but at least it isn't a Mom and Pop shop. Then I hit a few smaller stores and didn't see anything but hideous bolt-on BC Rich, Washburns, etc. I came across the Fernandes Ravelle which I think looks cool as anything, plays pretty well but has a very wide neck, not to my liking. Both of them I played had terrible electronics. Chinese made and $600 they better figure out how to put something decent in them, VR isn't going to sell all their guitars for them. Also played a Chinese made Brian Moore, very nicely made, well finished, crappy electronics. I guess that is the Chinese way. Both guitars cut out real easy but were otherwise pretty solid but far too expensive to sell if they are Chinese made.
I did find 2 guitars that I really liked, both Korean made under the Dillion name, essentially the same as Tokai. One was a Firebird VII in tobacco burst the other was a DC TV Jr., they played incredibly well, were really well finished and I could have bought both and spent less than $1000. I think at least one of them will have a new home soon, most likely the Jr since I am hoping to score a nice Firebird V in the next year or so. Picking up a good solid beater sounds like the ticket!
