Interesting local trade possibility

I was browsing Craigslist yesterday for no real reason and came across a PRS Mira for sale. I thought to myself, "Self, you have a few shows coming up in the next month and only one electric. This could be a good backup, and might be a nice addition to your strat for next week's studio session."

So, on a whim I emailed the guy to see if he'd consider taking my Taylor acoustic in trade, and he expressed interest. This is a great example of a 414ce that I got last year and have been happy with. However, I got it while I was in an "acoustic only" phase and now only really use it for practice/writing. It's a great instrument, but I'm thinking the second electric might be more beneficial to me now.

What say you, think I'll regret letting the acoustic go in the event the trade works out? What would you do in this situation?

Re: Interesting local trade possibility

Does the Mira have bird inlays? If so, the value new is a $100 difference from the Taylor 414 ($1900). If not, there is a $400 difference. Is it worth it? Maybe. Having said that, I wouldn't commit yourself to the trade until you have played the Mira to see if you like it though. Some people just don't gel with PRS Guitars.

Dots, not birds. I'll definitely be playing it first, if it doesn't wow me I can't see letting the Taylor go. Also, I can't really base trade value on new price tags. I've done some Ebay searches and after averaging out sale prices, the Taylor seems to fetch ~$200 more used.

I'd say that it can't hurt to meet up with the guy and try it out, although, I would make it crystal clear that if the Mira doesn't deliver you will not be making the trade. You don't want the guy to get his hopes up just to be pissed off that you don't trade him (if he still happens to get pissed off it's his problem). From there he can decide whether meeting up is still worth it to him or not.

Neither of us have said the trade is a sure thing. I actually extended the offer and after seeing some photos he requested he said he'd like to see the Taylor in person. So, I think it's clear we're both testing the waters.

Re: Interesting local trade possibility

Sounds like you both are on the same page then. What color is the Mira?

Vintage cherry

Re: Interesting local trade possibility

It seems to me like you should keep the Taylor, and just pick up something else as a backup. Or not. My friend Reid is in a touring band, and has played approximately 4 nights a week for the past 5-7 years, probably 1000+ shows, and he never brings a backup guitar. He plays a PRS McCarty.

A man needs to have an acoustic guitar.

Re: Interesting local trade possibility

I love the Mira, I was going to buy a used one recently but some things changed and I had to pass up on it. Same guitar except vintage mahogany with OHSC it was $999 and worth every penny in my opinion.

Re: Interesting local trade possibility

Well, the Taylor will be staying put. The girlfriend pleaded with me to keep it when I mentioned the trade idea, and that's pretty hard to argue with! Plus, I think I'm better suited by Fender-style guitars. I think I'll start the American Standard tele fund today :)
