Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

I would keep the Strat as well…..

True workhorse, polyvalent as hell, easy to tweak, well built, and you may get more $ selling your Gibby even if its a Studio….

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

If we enter this territory of thinking, then i bet few non musicians will ever care or tell if you play an LP or a strat type guitar or how modded they are. Personally to make my strat versatile and i mean :
- DMZ FT2 bridge, DMZ FT1 middle, DMZ chopper neck
- tone for bridge, while keeping the rest of the functions intact
- push/pull for bridge series/parallel
- push/pull for neck series/parallel
- toggle for adding bridge on all positions

wasn't that trivial. Lots of sleepness nights, burnt fingers, testing, unsoldering, re-soldering, scerwing the pickguard, unscrewing the pickguard, etc... But it was very worth it in the end. I doubt Les Paul or any other guitar with back routed electronic cavities and 2-pups electronics would be that hard to mod.

PS
I believe that SC pups are equally restricting tone-wise as much as unmoded HB pups, if not even more. You can always roll the volume down on a HB, but can do nothing about this ultra noizy lifeless and anemic SC. But its all a matter of style. I am both a rock, folk, blues player + metal shreder. I cant live having even one of my guitas in unshredable state. But thats just me.

Doesn't sound like you've played a Strat enough to know how to play it.

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

No question. Don't even have to think about it.....sell the Gibby. (And I actually love LPs. But the comfort and versatility of the Strat are what make this a no-brainer).

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

Though I would like to keep the one that plays and feels better. I would eventually get a strat .

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

I'd keep the Les Paul. Bigger sound, no trem to worry about, and to my eyes the more charismatic guitar. I have little confidence in getting a powerful sound, because my name isn't Marvin, Hendrix, Blackmore, Gallagher or Beck. I find most Strat playing sounds weedy and thin and have never understood why such a folksy sounding thing is so popular with rock players.

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

I have actually been in a similar situation, I had an LP and a Strat, and decided to give up the Strat for multiple reasons, firstly because I just can't go without an LP.

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

I'd get rid of the Fender USA Stratocaster, Black, Maple Board because I no longer do bolt-on necks (with the rare exceptions) nor long-scale guitars.

I'd keep the Gibson Les Paul Studio in Gloss Black because it has specs that I actually need: short-scale and "12 radius fretboard. Plus, it's black! :-D

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

For the purpose of this game, are you allowed to change pickups often?

Obviously the Strat is more flexible if that's allowed.

If not, do you get to pick the one pickup config or are we talking about SSS versus HH?

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

I have never liked the feel of a Gibson ( not saying there isn't one out there ) I just have never found it. I have always found Fender's to be extremely welcoming to my hands and fingers. But hey that's just the opinion of some guy who just started playing again after 2 decades so take my opinion as such.:lmao:

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

Strats have vibrato's and I think in the original post it sounded like pickups COULD be changed. I can, with the correct pickups, a few stomp pedals, and a decent amp go from metal to Hendrix on Little Wing. Not play as well, of course, but I can get all the sounds.
Listen to J. Beck play Little Wing, Then listen to him play Hammerhead-both live. I must rest my case there.

Re: Interesting One Must Go Thread: Fender vs. Gibson debate

I'd keep the LP and sell the strat, mainly because of Gibsons new price hike, if you down the road that you want whichever one you got rid of back the fender will be easier and cheaper to replace. Not only are the new Gibsons outrageously over priced, but its going to cause the demand, and thus price, of used models to go up as well.

Ya, with their hike, I hope they are prepared to lose a lot of revenue. Else beef up their Epiphone production. I'd be more keen on an Epiphone if they went to the Open Book headstock. Basically, I want the complete look of a Gibson at the Epiphone price.

Absolutely! We want our cake and eat it too!

Several years ago, Epiphone's were made in Japan for a short time with the Open Book headstocks. I thought they were fantastic. I don't believe they used the 17 degree headstock, but the 14 degree. I'm ok with that. To me, Epiphone's value is greatly deminished because of their really cheap Les Paul 100, Special, Studio's, etc. Those are mostly poorly built, terrible electronics, and general crappy guitars. Decent Epi's have to be Standards or above.
