Interesting phenomenon...

Re: Interesting phenomenon...

I can tell you that the GBE strings defintely differ between [some] brangs. A few years ago, I went to get some GHS Boomers, and the store was out, so I got some D'addarios of the same size. They sounded thin, twangy, and nasty. The store recomended DR Tite-fits, and they sounded much smoother and fuller, and less metallic than I had remembered to Boomers sounding.

Re: Interesting phenomenon...

All unwound strings are steel. When they say a set is pure nickel, nickel steel, or stainless steel, they are referring to the wound strings only. Personally, I hear very little difference in tone among plain strings from different manufacturers. Some last longer than others, but the tone is similar. The wound strings are a different story, I hear a very distinct difference between most brands. I agree that DR Pure Blues strings are one of the best sets around if you like pure nickel strings, but I also like the Fender Bullets for non-locking tremolo guitars. They don't last quite as long as the DR's, but they sound great and are half the price, and the bullet end is specifically designed to provide improved tuning stability with non-locking trems.

That's weird... I got the exact OPPOSITE results of D'addario vs. DR Tite Fits.

I'd like to try GHS Nickel Rockers (Eric Johnson uses
em religiously so they can't be all bad ;) ) or some regular Dean Markleys.
