Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Post the pictures here and I'll look at them and weigh in. If I can't figure it out, I'll get Seymour or Derek or MJ to weigh in.

And if I don't respond right away, shoot me a PM with a link to this thread.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Ok you 2. I've seen threads about using coffee to age plastic parts, but a thread about Coffee and a 78 pickup? You guys are warped.

Our friend Remy here is a real man. He prefers REAL beer w/ his pickups. Not this watered down stuff americans drink!

From the descriptions it almost sounds like he's gotten ahold of some sort of hybrids that had the original stickers taken off. Evan, MJ, etc... will probably know for sure.

What I'm worried about is if they aren't real duncans, then what are they. To get a hybrid w/ that low of a DC resistence, you'd have to use 2 low output buckers. The Custom/59 hybrids I've made/had were mormally in the 10k/11k range.

From a coffee hijack, to a beer hijack, I'm game! No one said Budweiser was beer.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Luke, Erik, you got my number: pickups, coffee and real beer. Hijjack my treads anytime:)

Brent...I could have known you're here haha..good to see you again -How's things?

Evan, thanks for joining in.

I will make pictures asap. The F-spaced Zebra is out of a guitar so no problem there-also it came with a Seymour Custom shop tag-but..there's no way of telling it is original (with that pickup).
e.g it has a production# on the tag, but nothing on the pickup? What's the sense there?

The set was a set as it was on ebay? Let me see if the link is still up? brb. Nope..no link- I found a set of Antiquities in the Completed listing-those are signed, numbered and labelled. Something I would think of the '78's as well.

Either way..we need pics, I will serve them asap. Can't believe how dumb I was putting them in without photographing..

The Kramer Expo must have been blurring my mind-but it;s over, it was great it can ALWAYS use a NYC Baretta, so yeah if you ever feel like it-com on over or down..plenty of beer and coffee as well :bigthumb:

Talk to you later today.

Thanks.
Remy

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Resistance:

Zebra F-spaced : 9,05 dc
Bridge (wired) : 8,59 dc
Neck (wired) : 7,60 dc

So please, what's your opinions?

Thanks for all the input,

Regards,
Remy

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

They look like custom shop pickups. The 78 Model, which is a bridge pickup, should have an average d.c.r. of 8.75K Ohms. At +/- 5%, that could vary from 8.31K to 9.19K.

Of course, this assumes your multi-meter is calibrated with ours and the temperatures were the same when you took your readings.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Hi Evan,

Thanks for replying. Would you reckon than both bridge pickups are '78's?
I was somewhat worried as both pickups have almost ,50DC difference measured under the same circumstances and with the same meter. A JB being 15,5 or a 16dc does not worry me a second e.g.

How about the neck version at 7,60DC? The seller advertised the 2 black ones as: "A matching pair of '78's being a gift from the wonderful people at Seymour Duncan for some work I did" Is there such thing (well you seem to make anything if one asks for it) as a '78 neck version? How come there's no other markings-is that standard procedure? I will not sell these easily, the neck is perfect-however the bridge I might like to change out (one day) for one that does come in at 9,0dc? Just to compare.

Both 'bridge' pickups sound more or less the same if memory serves me right (the zebra being a little more defined): distorted: warm, good mids, not as much body as I am known of Customs/JB's but sharp cutting highs.

Clean : almost singlecoil like, less snap, and fatter than singles though. Very good rhythm sound for 70's/80's funk.

Yes, Brent, it is. How could you tell by just the neckslot and heel of a neck?

Sorry for babbling of about these pickups-I never did so before-but with these being my 1st custom shops I am quite excited about these.

Regards,
Remy

Bro, if I had to guess, w/ no other info on them. I'd say yes, they are "78" models. With Variences in meters etc...it's not uncommon to find a 1.5k +/- in either direction for DC resistence.

I don't think it would be uncommon to find the "78" as a bridge/neck setup. Seymour and MJ can wind just about anything anyone would want. Alot of people prefer dual hum setups and would want a matching neck pickup for it. Just depends on how deep your pockets are I guess! Don't know about the whole work thing, but coiuld see it as pheasible as well. That being said, if you're wanting to try a "perfect" bridge pickup, I recommend trying the custom/59 Hybrid before shelling another $150 on a CS pickup! IMO, they really nail the early EVH tone.

Can't say much on the description, I've only played one for about 15 mins and that's not really enough time to get a good feel for a pickup. That and it was through a pretty crappy amp so.....

Lets just call it an eye for detail my friend! The oval style pickup routes says it's an older body..probably by sports. It's a dual bucker setup so obviously it's an imperial. The neck also shows some wear on the side of the fretboard also showing some age. Last I knew you only had 1 mapled boarded imperial and it was a nana head. It could have been the imperial you got off Tom, but it would have that kind of route for those kinds of pickups and last I remember of it, you had a sharkfin neck on it so....

Sorry for babbling of about these pickups-I never did so before-but with these being my 1st custom shops I am quite excited about these.

No need to apologise for babbling about pickups here, That's why we come here! If you didn't babble about pickups here we would probably think you're weird or Dutch or something LOL! ;)

If I ever make it to one, this will be going. You may recall seeing it on the old Kramer Forum. It's in the registry now in VK. It's got a Custom Custom in it.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Very clear Brent, sharp eye, long, detailed explaination-well unless someone has more clues- '78's it will be.

Well hybrid's is another step I will once make, but not for this badboy. For this guitar I want mid's EVH tone-1984. But still, I know it is most often mojo-I can't play like either of my heros haha.

Erik-that is one kick ass graphic-I've seen it-thought you were referring to the Lady Liberty NY grpahic, but this one is like a postcard I'd buy when I am over-I remember it being on ebay/forum for sale. I hope you can make it one day-this year will be great-new Kramer Baretta's for sale total reissue of the old bananahead Baretta. Not the 1984 that Musicyo sells now.

Thanks again got to run.

Thanks, Remy. My wife refuses to let me ever consider selling it. It has become "our" guitar even though I had it before we met. It's never been for sale so you haven't seen it on eBay. Mike W. posted it on the old forum when I first sent him a pic of it for the registry so that's probably it.

I want to try the new Baretta's. If they're everything that's been talked about, man, massive GAS will be ensuing...LOL.

Have fun with those pickups. A '78 is on my list to acquire at some point.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Ok, there is where I went wrong-sorry. I know I have seen it once only and not in real life or an óff'site. Vintagekramer or ebay. Glad it is in an admirer's household. Take good care of her.

So-'mystery solved' than? These are just unmarked/hardly marked Custom Shops EVH '78's?
