Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

other than the pole pieces, different battery and lack of mic, whats the difference between this and the magmic?

The pre-amp has a different voicing and there is a treble control onboard to adjust for different guitars and/or rooms. And, as you mentioned the Active Mag uses a different battery setup, which is mounted directly under the pickup for quicker battery changes.

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

sounds like a cool pup! i love my magmic but since i have more than one acoustic... :D

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

dammmnnnn!
I literally just ordered a mag mic today before seeing this but this is exactly what i was after! lol
Mag mic should still be pretty awesome...i just didnt really want to have to fish around in the guitar for the battery

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

so i emailed the dealer and asked them to change the order to the active mag if they have not despatched it yet.
Either way, I'm gonna have an excellent pickup to put in my guitar.

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

That demo sounds better than most piezos!

I wonder how it blends with a condenser mic. I’d like to try it with my iRig acoustic stage, plugged into the auxiliary channel to blend with the mic.

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

I am very interested in the reviews when they get into more people's guitars.

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

So the mag mic is on the way. While it is in the mail I can agonise over whether to cut a hole in the side of the guitar and install a battery box. the guitar is an Australian handbuilt Maton (the brand tommy emmanuel uses) from 1979. Its old, but not like....super old. :)

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

yeah, i wouldnt cut into it. i wrap the 9v in bubble wrap and let it bounce around in the guitar. been doing it for years and havent had any issues

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

website says 450 hours life.
50 3 set gigs is 150 hours.
So if i did three gigs a week, I'd need to change it once a year.
I change strings a lot more often than that.
Lol what am i worried about?
I wont cut in.

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

So, the Active Mag pup omits the microphone of the Mag Mic? Would this mean that its sound is less dependent on the size and volume of the acoustic chamber? In other words, might this bring a "big" sound to a smaller "parlor" acoustic?

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

ive been using a magmic for years, frequently without much or any of the mic since in a loud live environment feedback is an issue. a little bit of the mic is nice but actually adds high frequency content more than anything else. i have a active mag but havent used it on a gig yet to see the difference

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

I'd love a comparison between the MagMic and the new Active Mag.

Re: Introducing the Active Mag Acoustic Pickup

Ive only had a short late night session on it through a fender tube amp. It is nice. Thick lows and the treble strings sound thick too so itll be excellent for playing leads and fingerstyle. Spent a little time adjusting the heights. Used the mic more as a presence control than anything else. It just adds a little shine to things. Pup sounds fine with no mic as well. Ill get back to you after running it thru the pa, experimenting with preamps and doing a few gigs. It sounds promising tho. Already a lot more satisfying than any sound i can get out of a piezo set up.
