Introducing the Rail Series...

It ocurred to me the reason why they all use A8 is because the magnet is probably off-size for these pickups much like the magnet on the Dimebucker is. Maybe?

I understand marketing wanting to tie the new product to the successful old product

But if you make more than one change to the stew
It is different stew

It's not a pb&j if you change the peanut butter to ketchup and the jelly to mustard make it round and put a ground beef patty inside

point taken, but i dont think the change is quite pb&j to a burger.

and we are much more knowledgeable than 95% of guitar players when it comes to pups, so i do understand why they would call it a rails jb for example, even if we know thats not really the case

I don't think we will no for sure if the name is warranted until we get a few in the wild. It may be kind of like how the IM1 was designed to sound really close to the Fender $25k pickup but with different winding techniques.

Bruce at Riffs, Beards & Gear confirmed they are indeed higher output than their "normal counterparts" with more tightness and aggression. Sounds like the Jazz is very different than the OG version.

Also, someone in the comments on the official SD video said they got in contact with the Custom Shop and it seems a BLACK WINTER RAILS set is on the way! Sign me up, baby!

I just saw the email about the Blackened JB/59 set

I have to ask again
when did the start making JB and 59 pickups with those hex screws like Dimarzio?

I can understand the Blacked Out look but shouldnt they have black slugs and slotted screws?

I hate to be that guy but seems like they just call everything the by the old names

"here is a our limited run of Invader Pickups with a lower vintage wind and different wire with staples instead of the giant button head hex screws
and it may not sound or look the same but we are going to call it by the same name for marketing reasons"

the above is sarcasm

I think it is easier from a marketing and understanding perspective to use the old names instead of introducing a completely new product name. People might then say 'oh, so it is like a JB, then'. So, damned if you do, etc.

I have a "Blackened" set of JB/59 pickups with hex poles that were made back in 2020, so this is not super new. You can have pretty much any pickup "Blackened" as a Shop Floor Custom and I think merely changing pole pieces isn't really enough to consider them "not" a JB/59.

I mean, we've pretty much accepted that slight variants like the Antiquity JB and 35th Anniversary are "ok" to share the "JB" namesake. Heck, the actual modern production JB isn't really a pure "JB" if you think about it.

I definitely have more of an issue when they change the pole pieces AND the coil geometry AND the actual wind AND the magnet and still keep the JB/59 nomenclature. Probably a solid marketing tactic, but certainly a bit misleading...

They used A8s so it would sound like the model they are based on. The rails changed the formula enough, and the A8s brought it back sounding like they are supposed to.

Hmm...I wonder why my Custom Shop versions still use A5 then? :33:

Interesting comparison. Looks like it is indeed higher output and brighter.

I'm looking forward to seeing somebody do a full A/B of the typical hot-rodded set vs. the rails set. I've got a kit lp that has the pickup cavities aligned wrong...these rails could totally save the day for me lol.

I know the BL had various versions of the L500, with ceramic and alnico, with different wires and different rails. The thickness and material of the rails seem to be an important factor.
