Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

what do you think of this set... it is too extreme maybe?

is the invader only a good rhythm pup? i´ve heard a lot of good things about the invader as the metal rhythm pup, but do people use it also for soloing?

and about the full shred, how does it sound clean? the only guitar i´ve seen that has this set is the jackson usa warrior... and besides the shapes, the construction and woods of both (the warrior and my axe) are the same...

if there is any owner of both pups and can tell me some info about the tone for soloing of the invader and the full shred and the clean sound of the neck humbucker, i´d thank you so much... i´m almost decided for this set, i only need some real experiences...

thanks ;)

In alot of guitars the Invader lacks the clarity for leads, solo's and such unless you back way off the volume knob or, turn the gain way down. It sounds down right mean with rhythm though! The Full Shred neck, to me it sounded kind of sterile and lifeless though, it is bright and un-muddy! It just seemed to lack personality in my book. Bland would be a great word for it. I personally would choose the Jazz for the neck position becasue its still a bright neck bucker, its clear, and it has a great tone!

ok i see... oh this seems like a quest... which set do you recommend me instead of this one? custom-jazz then?

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

I LOVE the Custom/Jazz but, What sounds exactly are you looking for???

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

i´m looking for a progressive kinda tone but fat also if i want to play "slow" riffs or heavier ryhthm or whatever. i use to play a lot of dream theater, megadeth, metallica and opeth rigth now...so that kinda style... and a neck tone for sweep and alternate picking and a clear clean tone...

the guitar is a bc rich assasin (very very close to a jackson soloist) neck thru alder wings and maple neck, ebony board, 24 frets and floyd...into a marshall jcm 2000 dsl50, so hi gain distortion there...

thanks for the replies theodie

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

I've got a couple of guitars with Full Shred neck pickups. I like them! I think they sound OK clean. Maybe not the same "character" as a vintage pickup, but I wouldn't say it only sounds good through distortion.

I recently put a Custom in the bridge spot of my Hamer Studio. The sound is definitely metal! Reminded me of Iron Maiden's earlier stuff. I was surprised because my Robin Medley came with a Custom Trembucker at the bridge and it sounded too dark in that guitar. Couldn't get pinch harmonics happening. Maybe I just needed to change strings! LOL.

You may be very happy with a Custom if you're doing metal, especially progressive metal. If you were doing nu metal and were looking for a darker tone and your material didn't call for any soloing, I'd say the Invader might be just right for that.

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

A Custom on bridge would suit you better than an Invader. An Invader for Dream Theater it's just too much.

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

I'd say Custom/Jazz or JB/Jazz.

My friend has an Ibanez Universe with a JB/Jazz set and he plays nothing but progressive music through his Mesa DC-5 and he gets great tone for that style of music.

Wait, I meant he has a JB/Air Norton set in the universe.

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

Custom/jazz for sure!

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

mmmm it seems the custom will suit best for bridge... BluesGuyJ theres is a funny thing about the air norton and it is that i was ordering one since i bought the guitar last august... the pup is comming next week, the guy at the store called me this morning i was like... oh, sh*t, and what the hell i´m gonna do with the pup rigth now? it seems that i will try to mix dimarzios with duncans at first and then if i aint satisfied with the air norton i will pick a jazz or a 59 (btw, why a jazz better than a 59?) instead...

thanks a lot guys for the help...

I know that the Jazz is pretty much one of SDs best humbuckers for clean work. I'm not sure how it handles under high gain application though. Perhaps the 59 may be better suited for high gain application, but im not a pro when it comes to the 59.

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

i had the jazz at first and i find it a bit shrill when i play with distortion, the cleans were amazing, but i have had the 59 also and there wasn´t a huge diference with cleans but there was with the distorted sounds...

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

Well I have invader and full shred combo in my guitar n it sounds amazing n I find invader to be a gr8 rhythm pup n good for soloing too and full shred neck is the best neck pup I've ever played it has a nice clean sound n playing runs on it is very clear...

Re: Invader / Full Shred - best set for metal?

I reviewed the Invader and Full Shred neck on the Duncan blog recently in one of my guitars. They are a great combo, and work really well together. The split Invader/Full Shred neck was particularly impressive and actually made the guitar quite versatile.
