Invader neck position?

Hi there, I noticed that Duncan has released a neck version of the Invader SH-8 some time in the past 10 years when I wasn't paying attention! Has anyone tried it? I am seriously intrigued by the Invader pickups, and I would go for a set (mainly for aesthetics). But I am curious about the tones too. How versatile can it get? Many people say it's all metal, but most guitars DO have a volume knob too! :)

Thanks for the help!!!!

Re: Invader neck position?

The neck version has been around longer than that -- I had one back in the 80's. But one thing to note, which is unless they have changed the design, the neck Invader has a capacitor in it to shunt some of the treble to ground.

It's a pretty low DC resistance pickup (only 7.2k) with a ceramic magnet so I'm think Duncan's intent with the capacitor is to keep it from having too high a resonant peak (e.g., sounding to shrill and ice-picky). Which makes sense -- 7.2k + ceramic mag = really harsh and shrill on paper. But to my ear, the cap just made it dark and muddy -- maybe a lower value cap would have worked better for me -- but in those days I would just cut the cap out of it and I was happy with it.

It's been so long since I've had one that I can't remember exactly what it sounded like, only that once I cut the cap out, I liked it. But those huge pole pieces make for great string coverage so I've often toyed with the idea of buying one, putting an Alnico 2/3/4 magnet in and and seeing how it would work for blues and jazz. Now that I'm winding my own pickups these days, I could certainly get the sound out of it that I wanted if I decided the tone of the existing coil wasn't quite right for me.

Yes, I've played it and yes IT SUCKS!!!
It's nothing like a REAL neck pup like a Duncan Jazz or a Duncan Full Shred.
It sounds really compressed even as a neck pup. If you want to try one, that's fine but BE WARNED.

Re: Invader neck position?

Cool -thanks fellas. I have been starting to tinker with pickups too, so I think I could get them to work using a number of techniques, not all involving the pickup itself (Lawrence Q-Filter and Ayan Smooth & Slim come to mind). Then there's the magbnet that I can swap. I'll look at (well listen to) the cap and see what it's like. I am going ahead with the idea... but if anyone else has stuff to throw in, I always like to get as much info as possible!! All anyone says is how much output it has and it's great for metal. Guess I'll know for myself soon.
