Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

I am assembling a one-pup EVH-style frankenstrat. Alder body, one-piece maple neck/fingerboard, original Floyd. I am trying to decide between the Invader and the Rockfield Fat Ass. I have had really good luck with Rockfield SWV / SWC setup in a cheap Epi SG. The tracks of the Fat Ass on the R'field website sound awesome. I'm thinking of this project as just a wail-ass 80's screamer. Eddie, Lynch, Gilbert.

Will the Invader give me the screaming highs and pinch harmonics? Anyone have experience with the Fat Ass (no, not the one at home...)

Thanks

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

The invader won't but the duncan designed detonator will. I had that one in a yamaha aes 500 and was very 80's. I have no experience with that other brand

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

I've never played rockfield, but I have an Invader on a single HB BC Rich and I can offer some tonal critique......the Invader is quite a handful. I use a Marshall 100W tube head and there is almost no way to get a completley clean sound at loud volumes. It has chunky, beefy lows that will punish your speakers on heavy palm muting riffs, an absolute plethora of mids, and not really much treble. The Invader is extremley hot, even with the volume knob down to "2". It's more of a heavy rhythmn pickup IMO.
I use it when I need the heaviest, most brutal distortion sounds on a recording and it delivers.

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

Someone in the trading post has a set of Fat Asses with a pickguard for cheap, so their worth a shot.

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

an invader for 80's tones?????
why????
If you are not using a plexi then get a screamn' deamon...
or a 59...

I use a BK VHII for the 80's but 59 is great too...

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

Can one even still purchase Rockfield pickups a la carte? I didn't think they were available commercially anymore.

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

I think fat ass is similar to invader, but cheaper. I also think mafia sounds better, especially if you are going for a single pup guitar.

The think Rockfiled is more than a fair PUP for a good price, so if your budget is low go for it. Otherwise, go for SD. However, I personally prefer Distorsion, Custom, 59, Screaming Demon rather than Invader, but I don't know how they should sound in your guitar woods.

I've got some for sale, that are (still) new ones I bought a few years ago when Todd was with Custom Shop Parts. I've got a few Fat Asses and Turbos. I listed them in the Tading POst last month.

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

If you're going to have at least one vol or tone control, then make it a push-pull and switch the Invader into parallel mode. It morphs into a vintage PAF.
The Invader is one of my favorite pups just for that reason.

Re: Invader or Rockfield Fat Ass?

Rockfield's Fat Asses are garbage! That's what you have to change out when you buy a B.C.Rich. {example: B.C.Rich Draco comes with one} There is only one answer to this thread's question. Invader.
