I have owned the Invader since the day it came out somewhere around 10 years ago.
I have it in an Ibanez rg540, that I did a few tricks to. (paint, set up perfectly, 10-52 GHS many many miles on it)
When i first used this pickup, it was for 80's metal.
I still have it, I grew up ( a little...) and now play a bunch of styles of music.
It's pretty awesome for anything.

The thing is when people ask about pickups for punk they are asking a pretty broad question, when it comes to metal most would go for a high output pickup that has clarity for solo's, other types of music use mainly low output pickups, but punk has, can and will be played on anything from the lowest output pickups with minimal gain, to fat monsters like the invader with gain cranked. Punk can be played on any pickup, and for me the invader is my perfect tone for my punk music, but for someone else in a punk band it could be the exact opposite of what they want.

That's about right. The Invader is really a niche pickup to me. It's the ideal pickup for a guitar that is just anemically skinny tonewise because it has enough low freq response to knock down a wall -- or an entire building if you use 15" speakers.
The 500T is anything but weak but by comparison it is very bright. Both will just squash the front end of your amp but the 500T screams while the Invader rumbles and roars.
But overall, the Invader is definitely more powerful.

I prefer the Invader over the 500T. First, I'm not always getting my panties in a bunch about clarity.. I mean, yes, I like to hear the notes I'm playing, but they don't have to be bell-like for me. And it's a lot more powerful overall, and that's good for the type of music I play (BLS, early Metallica, Lamb of God).

maybe i was wrong about the invader....i went home this weekend and when i was playing it i actually really liked it. not as muddy as i remembered. sounded nice and powerful, a little dark, but still good. the only thing is, while its good, i dont think its exactly what i want in that guitar......which makes it tough for me to get a different pickup in there, since i dont dislike the invader, its just not what i really want in there and i can live with it. so it stays for the time being, ill decide more later

I have an Invader, I've played a JB, and yes. The invader would be best for punk/metal. I use my invader for Pop Punk/Punk/Post Hardcore/Hard Rock/Something that I improvise and people claim it's metal. It's a very rad pickup and I stand by it when it comes to Metal/Punk. I recently played a JB/59 combo on a Schecter guitar, I wasn't all that excited about it ALTHOUGH they were good pickups. Now the invader on the other hand, has a lot more "balls"(as people say) to it. The bottom end really gives it those chunky palm mutes, and the cleans are awesome if EQed properly.
If James from Metallica uses one and he can solo with them, why not you? :13:

If your talking passive pickups then the invader pickup is one of the most powerfull and full sounding ones on the market ,just log on to ebay and try bidding on one and you'll see how sort after they are! ,even the old rusty beaten up invaders are still holding their value so even if you get one and dont like it for what ever reasons be rest assured that its an investment.
Sooner or later Seymour Duncan will replace it with a newer version and then the current invader will be like gold dust. I really am a fan of the invader it makes virtually any guitar studio ready if your looking for Death metal guitar tone and high output gain, it gives your pre-amp valves something to think about. In my view the only way to top an invader is with EMG active circuitry and pickups.
