Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

Hmm. WHat kind of speakers do you have in your cabs? I see you have two .50 cal+ heads. The Invader in an SG is what Woody Weatherman uses in COC. In the early days I think he used a MarkII and now uses Rectos. The 50cal fits somewhere in between those and COC does a lot of stuff tuned in C#. The TZ bottom end may be a bit too much and the JB may be slightly too loose for that low of a tuning. The Distortion would also work really nice in that low of a tuning.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

They're a mix of Celestion Centuries and Eminence Tonkerlites (Both have Neodymiums mags) and I play in two bands, one is slightly tighter (and only tuned down to D, not dropped D or dropped C# Everything is tuned down a whole step or stepp and a half), thats Pasadena Napalm Division, the other is down to C#, and a little looser, not as loose as COC. That's deadhorse. And most of my pickups are custom jobs made by Mick at Manlius, all are 21k or hotter. I'm just wanting to try something different, I got a 2007 SG Standard, and I bought a Tone Zone, a JB and a Invader to try in the SG.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

Should have grabbed a Custom instead of a JB.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

I'm with the others, I'd go Duncan Distortion or Dmz D-Sonic. The ceramic Custom would be great too, but (based on the 3 u cited) you're looking for big output.

I hate the JB in mahogany, loose and lacking bottom end. The invader is big and fat sounding. Maybe a Dmz x2n. Even a custom is a better choice than a JB.

True. The JB won't work for heavy bottom end riffs...
But it's unrivaled for flowing raw rock chords.

Agreed. I'd have to say the X2N is what you want. There's not a lot out there as hot and tight as an X2N, except maybe the DD. The Custom is great but if you want crazy hot with tight lows, those 2. I am referring to the older X2N Power Plus, btw. They're easy to id by the nickel silver baseplate. The newer ones are still super hot but seem to be lacking something up high, like the old ones played back through a thick cloth.

That figures. I'm pretty sure I traded you a X2N a few years back!

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

No one has an opinion on the Tone Zone? Look, I'm no stranger to high output pickups. I played EMG 81's for at least 15 years, trying all along to find a passive that sounded better, tighter etc. so I tried a lot of pickups. This is before Bareknuckles and WCR exsisted, so I was buying Tom Anderson H3's, APC or Adder Plus persuader custom hots, Australian actives, can't remember the brand but the model was the SPA or Super Phat Ass, Gibson tony Iommi, etc. Tried some Duncans and Dimarzios along the way including a Distortion, Custom, Custom Custom, X2n, Air Norton which I still believe is one of the best neck pickups out there.... always went back to the 81 until I bought a WCR Iron Man, that there is a pretty great pickup. Well I was using those until I read about this guy building clones of WCR and Bareknuckle pickups....Enter Manlius, he makes his own models now, and will build you a custom job just by telling him what you want. So I'm good with super high output, tight low end pickups etc. Hell, I tried a MCP Solution, WB Ultra Voilet and Hell... They weren't that great. With these 3 I'm trying to experiment with lower ( lower than 20k) output pickups. My other guitarist uses stock Gibsons, 496 or 498? Whatever the alnico ones are and they're medium output. If they don't work out I'll just sell em and buy more Manlius models.

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

a) resistance is not an accurate indication of the "output" of a pickup.

b) considering you've tried all those pickups and yet are still looking for something tighter then maybe you need to examine something else in your rig to get tightness.

What gauge strings are you using?
what are your amp settings?
do you use any effects?

Re: Invader vs. JB vs. Tone Zone for metal

Most metal players are always gravitating towards the ceramic designs in search for more low end. I tune down to dropped B with Alnico V magnets and my tone is beautiful and powerful... It would be more powerful with an Invader but would lose it's beauty. The ceramic models also seem a bit too perfect sounding and don't have anywhere near the personality of Alnico pups. Granted, the custom is an awesome pickup and it's got plenty of personality.

I actually enjoy hearing the low end bubble and gurgle with a JB for metal... It might not sound as "metal" as one would like isolated, but will sit perfectly in the mix.

I'd try an Alnico 8 in the JB or the Tone Zone. Tom DeLong plays the Invader...

Oh and JBs are somewhat finnicky in mahogany but by no means do they sound bad in mahogany as a blanket rule. I have JBs in mahogany and they sound great.

You did and that's what put them on the map, for me! Though it was one of the newer ones, it happened to find it's way into a really bright guitar and I still love it! From there, I figured out the differences in the old and new ones...
