Iommi Lurking in My AC30

I just got that vintage Tony Iommi tone from my Vox AC30 RI. From my LP Standard (JB pup in bridge) I go into a Keeley Time Machine Boost then straight into the Normal channel of the AC30. I've got the amp's volume, bass and treble dimed with Cut set to 12:00. To keep my neighbors at bay I'm using a 16-ohm THD Hot Plate.

For those of you not familiar with the Time Machine Boost (TMB), it's essentially two boosts in one: Vintage (offering a Rangemaster clone with two settings -- "1966" stock a la Clapton and "1973" full-range a la Iommi and Brian May) and Modern (a clean FET boost). I'm using the Vintage side of the TMB set to "1973" with Volume at 12:00 and Intensity dimed. (The original Rangemaster didn't have an Intensity knob. Setting the Intensity on the TMB to max. emulates the Rangemaster's intensity.)

Sure, I'll plow through tubes keeping the volume dimed on the AC30 but the tone is well worth it.

Just wanted to share the good news. Too satisfying a moment not to share with my forum bros.

yes you will go through some tubes running a VOX like that...also becareful those VOX amps are bad to catch on fire when pushed real hard for long periods of time...running an AC-30 all the way up then bringing down to livingroom levels IS running it pretty hard...

Are we talkin' literally catching fire?

Man, I wanna hear clips!

I bet that thing sounds monstrous with that booster in front. I dream of having that rig someday, haha, good to hear you've reached a little bit of tone heaven!

:laugh2:

I would just hate to hear about your amp going up in smoke...a buddy of mine was doing a very similar thing some years ago with his AC-30, I warned him about it and he didn't listen...that AC-30 is a memory!

Okay, so you've cited a possible problem. Any practical solutions out there, folks?

Okay, I put together a *very* rough 30 sec. audio clip and mixed it down to WAV format; it's the into to "Sweet Leaf." I just have no idea how to post it. Never done this kind of thing before. (In fact, this is really my first foray into home studio recording -- quite a learning experience.)

Help, anyone?

Re: Iommi Lurking in My AC30

cool i want to listen to that clips. Maybe try JJ tubes (they are meant to be able to take the heat of the AC30) and maybe put a fan near it and just use it before and after playing (according to some cooling tube kills tone)

Re: Iommi Lurking in My AC30

Okay, I finally got to posting the clip on SoundClick:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=473676

Again, it's a very short clip ( < 30 sec. ). This is the intro riff to Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf." Please keep in mind that this is my first time recording anything on my own so I kept it short and simple. However, it was still a good learning experience. From this I realized:
  • I need to get better at double-tracking myself.
  • Equalizing something coming out of your amp and into your computer is a real bear, so I didn't bother (this time around).
Since this is my premier foray into home recording PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me any constructive feedback you can.

Other than that, enjoy!

Re: Iommi Lurking in My AC30

SWEET!!! Nothing like a boosted VoX for killer Distortion.
I like useing the brilliant channel 90% with treble and bass at 12:00 (facing me) and just a little bit of cut boosted with and SD-1 level / drive on full tone 11:00.
Its very like ur tone except less bassy.

Re: Iommi Lurking in My AC30

Hmm...I should try this through the Brilliant channel. I believe that channel has more output as well. It would certainly give me more control over EQ since the Treble and Bass controls are disabled in the Normal channel.

Thanks for the feedback, James!
