what was tony iommi's setup on the first and second album, i know he was using an SG on the second album, and i heard he used a strat? on the first, what amps was he using for those albums, and did he use a fuzz pedal?.

EDIT: i was just on the guitar geek site, and seen that he was using a arbiter
rangemaster?, what exactly is that.

Yeah, I think I remember hearing he used a Strat on the first album but switched to an SG part of the way through. I could be wrong though.

right on...the first sabbath record was almost ALL a strat...the bridge pup dies, and the backup guiytar became the main guitar (that was the SG), a rangemaster is an old school treble booster!

Re: Iommi set up

Was he using Orange Amps then? I've seen some old videos where he was using them, but I always wondered what he used in the studio. Also, wasn't the first album recorded in a garage for like $500 or something?

I think that the Oranges came later and only on tour...to NAIL the tone on the first record try a Vintage style strat, a treble booster and an old Laney tube head

Re: Iommi set up

btw, a rangemaster is really a terrible sound, although they go for lots of $ today. You can build one on your own for a few dollars worth of parts.

Iommi used whatever was laying around the studio at the time of the recording. His tone never stayed the same from album to album. I like his tone on 'Heaven and Hell' the best.

In the November 2003 issue of Guitar World, Tony Iommi states that he only played the Strat on "Wicked World".
