iOS interface vs POD (or similar)

I'd like something for goofing at home with headphones. Years ago, I had a Line 6 Guitar Port and enjoyed it. I've also had several multi-fx/modelers and enjoyed them, as well. What I have not had is an iOS interface, but I find the idea very appealing. I have an iPhone 6, iPad Mini 2, and a 2009 Macbook 13" running El Capitan, 4gb ram, 2.13ghz Core 2. If I can't use the interface with the Macbook, no big deal, but it'd be sweet to have all three available.

It looks like around $100 would get me a used PODXT or any number of different interfaces. I'm looking at iRig or Line 6 Sonic Port.

What do you more technologically inclined folks recommend?

I've been using the iRig 2 into my iPad mini 3 and having fun. The free versions of AmpliTube are ok, but I ended up buying a bundle that gave me the Slash amps, Hendrix, Fender and Orange. Plenty of options to keep me amused. I have an iPhone 5 but haven't tried it with that.

I use amplitube with an irig hd. Sounds ok and is perfect when I really have to be quiet. It's my main tool when I want to learn a song, easy playback over anything in my library.

Re: iOS interface vs POD (or similar)

I used to use a Line 6 Sonic Port with an iPhone 6. There's a Line 6 app for it. This year they overhauled the interface and deeply divided their user base on whether it stinks or not. I've been too turned off by the new interface to try actually playing through it.

You know what's awesome, though? I have a first-gen iPad that can't be updated beyond iOS 5.1.1, so it's still running the old, killer-graphics version of the app, and it can never change. And frankly, the iPad has the kind of screen real estate that can take advantage of it, as opposed to a phone.

That makes me envious; mine can only be a few months newer (iPad 2) and iOS 6 totally bricked it years ago, while it still remains "functional." Funny, they kept pushing upgrades till this year on the poor thing.

I use a Peavey AmpKit, cheap/flimsy, but "good enough" messing around on vacations or whatever.

If this is soley for playing at home, definitely go iOS with an interface and app.
