Is a 1972 Marshall 50wtter still a good buy ?

There is a guy 30min drive away from me that is selling his '72 Marshall 50W head (Super Lead, correct ?) and a home made 2X12 cab with Celestion K12T – 100 (never heard of 'em) for $823.00

Are these still desirable amps ?
It is a non-master vol amp, so can i get a good tone from it with out blasting the surrounding houses windows ?

Is this type of amp worth the asking prince ?

Any insight/info welcome !

Thanks guys

You probably won't be able to crank it to power tube distortion levels but it will make a mighty fine clean platform for pedals.
Sounds like a good deal as long as it's working fine. I'd love to own one!

Make sure what you are getting into before you spend a dime but over here right now a 1972 Marshall 50 watter is 1500-2k on a bad day...more if it's clean

Yeah.
Wow.!
If it is the "real thing"... you would be getting a gift.
As with any "vintage" amp you should take a good look inside the chassis.
Although at that price, the whole board and original iron would have to be missing before I would feel ripped-off.
good luck

Prices have come way down since that kind of money. I see '70's 100 watters in the $1,000-$1500 range all the time. You have to have an early minty example (or rare colors) to break $2k these days.

Really? I guess I am out of touch a bit but still less than a G note...sold deal if it is what it says it is...

I would happily pay that kinda coin for that amp, even if it has been tinkered with.... Pics look cosmetically solid. It will be loud as hell, a Lar/Mar Master Volume mod, cheap and easy to install will let you get to the good stuff at very reasonable volumes. I put one in my 200 watt West Fillmore, and that thing sounds great even below talking volume.

Bargain! Even over here in the UK you'd probably pay in excess of £1000, if it's only 30 minutes away I'd go check it out and if it sounds good it's worth a punt. If the guy will let you take the amp out of the box all the better.

It looks like I need to start shopping in South Africa.

If you don't need it, you could also flip the cab easy for at least $100.

72s are considered some of the better/more consistent heads generally for the 50 watters. . Apparently they were working the amps out really hot that year. The reissue 1987 plexi is actually based on the 72 metalface so it would be ascreamer.

And yes, great price if it is not totally wrecked.
