Re: is a C5 really like a 59?

:laugh2: when the word scooped is used to decribe the C 5, how pulled back are the mids? and what mids are pulled back(low mids/high mids)?
The C5 has a "dip" (I say "is lacking in") low mids, mid mids, and high mids. There is all this bass, and tons of top end. In the wrong guitar it can sound quite thin.
I am CERTAINLY not saying that the MANY people who like the C5's sound are imagining it. MANY people like that sort of "smile EQ". It's a metal thing to my ears. To each their own.
As far as playing through different amps, over the course of time I've played the C5 through (all amps are all tubes): Paul Rivera made Fender Concert, Fender Blues Jr, '65 Fender Twin, Twin re-issue, Marshall 2205 (& 2210) JCM 800 half stacks, Boogie Mark IV, Matchless Cheftain 30, Bruno Cow Tipper, and another Bruno amp (I forget the model - amazing amp though). One can ABSOLUTELY get a feel for what a pickup sounds like.
There is a strong dip in the mids with the C5 when compared to other pickups such as the stock Gibsons, Duncan Custom, CC, JB, DiMarzio Air Zone, Breed, Rio Grande BBQ. And others I'm sure as I played other people's guitars during that same period (not knowing for sure what pickups were in) and heard the same thing.
Oh, and like was said, you can always look at the Duncan Tone Chart and see (not that the Tone Chart is entirely accurate all the time, but for this it is....)
Peace.
