is a C5 really like a 59?

Notice the difference in harmony reviews. When the C-5 was discovered by good guitar players as the Custom Custom Custom, it got great reviews. As soon as that pickup trickled it's way down to the beginners, the reviews got stupid, especially with that "scooped" description. The Custom 5 is in the top 3 of the best Duncan Bridge humbuckers IMO. It's possibly the only one that sounds great on clean, midgain, and highgain....equally. I think it would have been an overnight sensation (even moreso) if it had been called the 59 Custom Bridge or the Custom Custom Custom.
I also like the CC, JB and Antiquity, but the C-5 sounds more perfect with any guitar and amp I've used it in, which is 5 so far. 3 Pauls, 1 McCarty, and a H-S-S strat.

So people who say that it's scooped (which it really is even by looking at the tone charts) are beginners??

It's scooped, get over it. It's a great pickup IMO but doesn't work well in all guitars or setups, just like every other pickup.

:laugh2: when the word scooped is used to decribe the C 5, how pulled back are the mids? and what mids are pulled back(low mids/high mids)?

Re: is a C5 really like a 59?

I though the mids were very pulled back and this was in a Les Paul. I didn't leave it in there for more than 5 minutes to see if it had a lack of upper-mids or lower-mids but I immediately heard that hollow type sound that some people described here.....the JB went right back in that guitar....it sounded so full in comparison.

The C5 has a "dip" (I say "is lacking in") low mids, mid mids, and high mids. There is all this bass, and tons of top end. In the wrong guitar it can sound quite thin.

I am CERTAINLY not saying that the MANY people who like the C5's sound are imagining it. MANY people like that sort of "smile EQ". It's a metal thing to my ears. To each their own.

As far as playing through different amps, over the course of time I've played the C5 through (all amps are all tubes): Paul Rivera made Fender Concert, Fender Blues Jr, '65 Fender Twin, Twin re-issue, Marshall 2205 (& 2210) JCM 800 half stacks, Boogie Mark IV, Matchless Cheftain 30, Bruno Cow Tipper, and another Bruno amp (I forget the model - amazing amp though). One can ABSOLUTELY get a feel for what a pickup sounds like.

There is a strong dip in the mids with the C5 when compared to other pickups such as the stock Gibsons, Duncan Custom, CC, JB, DiMarzio Air Zone, Breed, Rio Grande BBQ. And others I'm sure as I played other people's guitars during that same period (not knowing for sure what pickups were in) and heard the same thing.

Oh, and like was said, you can always look at the Duncan Tone Chart and see (not that the Tone Chart is entirely accurate all the time, but for this it is....)

Peace.

i think what he was trying to say was that people that dont knwo how to do things such as eq a certain amp the right way or adjust little things that may alter tone.

I am one of those who likes C5, but thinks that it could use slightly more lower mids and spongy bass. That's why I prefer CC (or C3) over a C5. :offtopic: This has nothing to do with what you are asking, I know.

I totally agree with what you said about the C5. Its the only thing I don't like about it. Are there any pickups that sound like a C5 just with more lower mids (and maybe less highs)?

Hi,

What I suggest you do is to contact Steven Kersting at www.ampge.com and purchase some alnico 3 bar magnets. Swapping magnets ain't difficult, and a C5 with an alnico magnet is definitely you should try for what you are describing.

What about a SH-12 Scremin Demon?
It has just a little bit more output, a bit more highs and less bite.
In my opinion the '59 sounds fatter than other (louder) pickups and has more bite.
Sometimes i just like to have more output, so i'm thinking about a Custom SH-5.
