is a full stack really necessary?

I have a 5150 head and 4x12 and was thinking of getting another 4x12, but then i thought if it was really necessary. Just 1 cab is loud enough to make your ears bleed....but yet i guess it depends on the atmosphere and acoustics of where your playing. So what do you guys think...is it really necessary?

You have a 5150...you have a 4x12 cab...no need for another cab...you can play anywhere.

2. You want to get yourself a hernia (unless you pay/have others to shift your gear around).
3. You play in large stadiums/arenas all the time.
4. You want to use different speakers in the 4x12 cab (bottom/top end).

Yep, that more or less sums up the reasons for a full stack. Maybe add: I was deaf before, so all I can do is FEEL the music. Better be true, because you sure as hell wWIL be deaf afterwards

I've got a full stack (one 4X12 with G12M-70's and the other with V-30's). Even though I have two, I never gig with both - it just isn't worth it, even for the tonal differences...

95% of gigs, a 4X12 is MORE than enough...

Uh I would haul my 4x12 with me.
I like the extra dimension of 4x12's.
And with a ply cab it is not that heavy and it has little wheels

I play on two 112 cabs and I can get more than loud enough to piss off any club owner, bartender or sound guy. Deafness is also a serious possibility, but I try and keep it reasonable.

Since Im running 90 watts a side, a guess I could run four 412 cabs but that would be silly. Afterall it only takes 112 to feed a microphone.

Apart from major arenas and outdoor venues (and even then, I don't think you NEED it), I can't think of a single situation where more than a 4X12 is needed, I agree

Good point, but then you also need a singer that will be prepared to wear a leotard, and I think that is a more pressing concern than the stack!!!!


...even if I DO like the Darkness!!!....leotards, posing, ****-rock,<sigh> it's good to see it back

I play through a full stack, and when I have to use only one 4x12, I'm reminded at how much fuller, effortless, and cleaner a full stack sounds. There is no comparison. I beg to differ with anyone who says that one 4x12 is just as good as two 4x12 cabs (or more ) . There is simply nothing better. If you play anything resembling classic heaviness, you need a full stack!!

A full stack is nice because it's easier to hear. You don't have to play with big volume, but you can still get a big sound that is elevated, thus easier to hear at lower volumes.
Like Rid said, 4x12s with casters are not that hard to move around.
