Is a POD a good alternative to buying some pedals?

I was going to be looking for some good chorusing, compression, and some noise reduction stomp boxes, and by the time I figured up the cost, it'd be about the same price as a used PODXT.

So how does a PODXT work for replacing pedals? As in running it infront of your amp.

And how netrual on tone is it? Will it add anything strange?

Basically the POD is a bunch of pedals all in one. In that aspect you just have one piece of gear to work with. The POD will certainly give you Compression, Chorus, and noise reduction (pretty sure it has nr).

I know a guy in a local band that uses one with an Ibanez into a Randall head. Check out these sound clips, he's playing all of the leads.

sort of, i mean, they sound SIMILAR, but the only way to get the same thing, is to have the same thing, and modelers really can't nail tones

Foot controllers for PODs are very pricey. . .unless you get a POD XTL of course.

go with the POD XTLive. it is designed so that it can be used for just the different effects in front of the amp. this will also save you the cost of buying a PODXT and a floorboard. not to mention it will save you setup hassle.

Ive heard The XTlive sounds great with a tube power amp. Never really heard it though just saw some reviews when I was thinking about having that set up.

My GT-8 begs to differ. :)

I can dial up so many great tones on it it's scary.

In fact, some sound people swear I'm using a tube amp until I show them my rig.

Try to save up a bit more and get a Boss GT-8 and use the 4 cable method. This way, you can run wah, OD, and comp in front of your amp and all the modulation effects and NR in your loop.
