Is anyone building HiWatt Clones/Inspired amps?

JeffB

Let it B
Took a look on the bay the other day and it's all old amps that are super expensive.

And a few cheap SS amps.

Not at the moment but i'm planning a Weber HiWatt kit for this autumn...

Re: Is anyone building HiWatt Clones/Inspired amps?

Yeah. I would kill myself If I tried to build my own, even if I could scrape up the time ( which I cannot).
;)

Are there any retailers/companies doing one...65...drZ, etc. ?

Like many things you have to make the time when you start liking it enough... And I do.

Reeves builds nice HiWatt clones.

That was going to be my suggestion as well.

Re: Is anyone building HiWatt Clones/Inspired amps?

The big question is, who uses those expensive components, namely the really proper transformers.

You can copy the schematics all day long, without that heavy output transformer you'll not get close.

I will agree that the Partridge iron does matter but I disagree that w/o it you can't get close.

I used to have a Hiwatt Custom 50, no Partridge iron, not even PTP and still sounded and felt very much like a Hiwatt so while the trannys are important they are not a must IMHO.

Re: Is anyone building HiWatt Clones/Inspired amps?

I am not looking for complete clones, but something that gets in the ballpark, preferably at lower wattage ( I know, I know) or power scaling. Not looking for the Gilmour cleans but the cranked all to hell thing.. I will hit the front end with my EP Boost like it's 1977 ;)

Of course fanes are key too.

It seems like there are a few good AIAB Hiwatt pedals, but I have been down that route with high end Marshall pedals, and ultimately it is unsatisfying for me. I am planning on major amp/cab upgrade by years end. An attentuator would be in the cards if necc.

Ok. Wow. Looks like Reeves is in the ballpark, and they have some lower watt and power scaling options.

I have a Reeves Custom head and it's one of the best amps I have ever owned. Hiwatts were something that I lusted after for a long time because I got hooked on them, but Reeves is the man. I have a Custom 30 purchase setup for next week. Hi-Tone makes Hiwatt clones. Ceriatone makes the Hey-What. I have heard they are very good. Hi-Tone is more expensive than Reeves I think, but Ceriatone probably has the best clone at the lowest cost.

Really digging the tone of the HITONE 30/15 JP. That's very similar to what I am going for. I REALLY like the fact that Hi tone is using 6v6 instead of el84s for their lower watt amps. I am trying to get away from el84s.

Also the reeves 10 watt with a single el34 is pretty cool. Kinda marshally and kinda Hiwattish.

Re: Is anyone building HiWatt Clones/Inspired amps?

I think these guys are an American company with rights to the Hiwatt name: Hiwatt.com. Back around winter NAMM they released their "Little Rigs" which I believe are EL84-based mini Hiwatts in three flavors: P, D, and J. (Townsend, Gilmour, Page) Looks like a head and a single 12' cabinet go for $2000, but they're all sold out at Chicago Music Exchange.

WANT, but cannot AFFORD.

Re: Is anyone building HiWatt Clones/Inspired amps?

I saw those, as well as their high watt (npi) models. All their lower watt amps are el84s, which I am trying to avoid. I just do not like el84s all that much. I have a class 5 and a tubemeister 18 and neither one.does what I need. Weird mids, too much chime, and too strident when they are blitzed.

Was VHT inspired by Hiwatt? A friend has one, and it sure sounds like it to me.

I don't know if this is true, but supposedly the VHT 2150 was inspired by Steve Fryette hearing his friend's rack which used a pair of HiWatt 200s (4xKT-88) in stereo as power amps.
