Is Binding a must-have on quality guitars ?

Re: Is Binding a must-have on quality guitars ?

i'll add bound tele bodies always look hotter to me then non-bound bodies...

Re: Is Binding a must-have on quality guitars ?

Does nothing for me, on the contrary, I am big on contoured, comfortable fretboard and body edges and binding prevents that.

With binding the edge needs to be more or less 90 degrees without much leeway for contouring.
Plus, there's those companies that ruin a perfectly good guitar with a gazillion layers of Abalone binding from the headstock to the body. Talk about TACKY!

With my Stinnett I wanted a natural binding for the body top because I wanted to leave the back clear but still wasn't willing to compromise on contoured body edges so Will had to go to some trouble to stop the dye before it hit the edge of the top so that it'd be contoured and still look good.
The up side was that it gave the illusion of a thicker binding and thus, a thicker top :)

The non-binding that PRS does is kind of cool IMO. Other than that, I'm pretty ambivalent about binding on bodies and really dislike it on fretboards. My #1 guitar is #1 in spite of, not because of, its bound body.

Re: Is Binding a must-have on quality guitars ?

For me binding is part of the aesthetics and is a must on certain gutiars, and a must not on others.

Binding is a must:
  • Les Pauls
  • SG's
  • Semi and Hollow Bodies

Binding is a must not on:

  • Strats
  • Teles
  • PRS

Forget body binding (i love it on everything except a Strat), talk to me about BOUND FRETBOARDS!

I quite like the look of bound board with block inlays on Jazzmasters. A few years ago, I thought long and hard about having USACG build me a JM with binding all around -- since they offer binding on contoured tops -- but ended up deciding I cared about the name on the headstock after all.

I like it on some and hate it on others.

I'm a really big fan of murdered out guitars (all black, no fret markers, minimal detail work), yet for some reason manufacturers seem to like sticking white binding on an otherwise killer looking black guitar. I hate it.

Re: Is Binding a must-have on quality guitars ?

It makes it harder to scallop the frets.
Actually, blingy binding doesn't really do a lot for me. I like plainer guitars.

Re: Is Binding a must-have on quality guitars ?

i heard no binding was the real secret to eddies tone

His guitars used to have excessive neck, body, and headstock binding, but it all burst into flames during tracking of the first album.
