Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

My buddy goofs on me all the time because all of my Fenders sound like Gibsons. Whatever floats your boat.

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

Strats are THE mod guitar! Just unsolder the current pickguard and drop in a new one with new electronics. If and when you sell, you can return it to stock in 5 minutes, plus you keep the new (and probably more preferable) pickups. Shoot, swap necks, bridges, anything... They are so awesomely modular no one will have an idea you did anything...

Quoted for truth.

Besides, it's way better to have an instrument you'll never want to sell, because it's become "you" instead of a potential future ebay item.

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

I'm curious about whether or not I should mod Fender American stuff? Will it devalue to the guitar?

I'm not talking about cutting in a new pickup or swapping out necks or cutting my name into the body of the guitar. I'm just talking about doing a simple pickup swap, maybe change the pickguard, change out some of the electronics?

If I were to perform those sorts of things, would it be fair to sell the guitar for used Fender American prices, still?

Keep the stock electronics. Swap them back in when it's time to sell.

I don't see the conundrum here? There's no way if you kept all of the stock stuff, that you'd take a hit for having swapped it in and out again, unless it was a ridiculously bad hack job. I'd dare you to tell the difference if you are decent at soldering/desoldering.

Plus, people mod the (more expensive) les paul all the time. Same thing with just about every gibby. I think I played an Andersen once and thought there was no way someone would play that guitar and not get exactly the tone they were looking for. Everything else, someone is going to mod looking for something different.

I don't advise worrying about these things. Do what makes the guitar sound good, and revert it back to stock if you need to sell. Even if it would be more valuable with SD pickups, you're going to make more of your money back parting it out anyway.

Mods I shall perform!!!

Thanks for the ideas and opinions, dudes!

I think all I'm going to do to my recently acquired Tele is change out the pickguard and knobs... then draw a white bowtie on the black pickguard (don't ask).

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

The Thirteenth Commandment: Thou shall not modify Fender American guitars.
So let it be written, so let it be done.

Nah....chop it up, nobodies gonna mind.

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

It's been covered here already. Stock parts aren't going to sell for much anyway. I just box up the parts and keep them in case I ever change my mind and want to go back to stock or if something changes and I either have or want to sell the guitar. I've modded every single one of my USA Fenders to my own tastes.

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

Modify a guitar to what you want! I have a strat that I plan to put either a JB humbucker or jb.Jr for the bridge and personally I don't care what others think if it's good to me I am fine with that

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

It took me 14 years to change anything on my Strat but I finally did do a pickup swap. I could change it back to original any day though.

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

I always see guys taking out the old pickguard and electronics, putting a new one in, and keeping the old one to put back in the guitar when you're ready to sell, that way when or if you get a new Strat, Strat Style, or build your own, you can sell the old stuff and keep the new electronics that are worth more (usually).

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

I wouldn't route for a Floyd, but I would drop in a new pickguard and pickups.

Re: Is it a sin to modify a Fender American guitar?

Back in the 80s I bought a new fender lead II. I modded mine to the point of no return. Resale value? Not much in my case.

I looked at it this way. I had fun with it and thats worth it to me.

Mods were routed for Dimarzio dual sound humbucker. Routed for a Floyd. Lead II guitars were hard tails.

Its not a sin to mod a guitar to your liking. It dont matter if it is an american or import.

Here is a pic,its a bad blurry picture from the 80s. Modded fender on the right. Hard to see. I wish I still had it. I was a fun guitar.
