Is it just me or do other people do this. Before I sit down to play guitar I always wash my hands. 1) I can't stand the dirty and oily feeling of unwashed hands and 2) I don't wanna get my guitar all slimy with oils from my hands. I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which is also another reason I wash my hands so much. Anyone else just HAVE to wash their hands before they touch their guitar or is it just me?

I do it sometimes, if I just pick up a guitar to play a couple riffs, I odn't bother, although if I am intending to play for a while I will.

No unless I've just eaten a burger or something and my hands feel greasy. But that actually never happens. Guess I'm the only one that voted no :dance:

I'm a bit of a germaphobe myself, but I never wash my hands just to play gtr. Actually, my gtr is one of the few entities that I willing don't mind sharing germs with.

i hate the feeling of my sweaty hands moving up and down the neck..disgusting.

I have to or my strings last about a day. I must have really acidic sweat I guess. Think its something to do with diet ( too many big macs)

Sometimes. It depends on how oily/grimy my hands are. If they don't feel oily or greasy, I don't bother. That, of course, assumes that my hands were already visibly clean.

I don't like washing my hands before I play. It makes the calus on my fingers soft, and it breaks down much easier. I play a lot of fingerstyle acoustic and my right hand fingers calus peels easily when my hands are wet. I usually won't play after I get out of the shower for the same reason! Cleaning the FB is easier than replacing torn calus.

Treat a guitar like a dirty whore and she'll really squeal.

I take good care of my guitars but it seems that some of the best players really thrash theirs. Like Stevie Ray Vaughn. I doubt he ever wiped down his guitar. To each his own.

Don't have oily hands so I don't worry. Minimal Dirt as well.


Sure if my hands are covered in dirt or oil I'd wash them ... but I'd wash them straight away anyway ... no sense in keeping them dirty until I play guitar

I only wash them if they're really dirty (just ate pizza, just changed oil in truck, ect).

Normally no unless like mentioned before i just ate something greesy liek fast food and my hands are oily as hell and i know it will mess up my neck, i just clean it quickly with some soap and water. But normally since im a pretty clean person no i rarely clean my hands before playing.

no... the weird thing is I used to be OCD, got over it a few years back, but all of my compulsions back then even were to make things sloppier anyways the absolute truth if you believe it, most people don't. I do keep my guitars clean though, polish them about once a month. but all the fried chicken grease/motor oil/random sh!t that gets on my hands usually winds up polishing the neck and clogging the strings. At least til the next cleaning

editted to say- washing my hands makes them cold and stiff, not condusive to guitar. I usually warm my hands somehow before I play

It's not a compulsion, but I don't play with dirty hands. Although there's a different problem that has cropped up: the new Foam soap dispensers. I find that the foam makes my hands sticky and interferes with playing. So, just plain water when that is all that is available.

i voted yes even though i mean sometimes. 90% of the time i do so that the fretboard doesnt get filled with excess oil or junk. same with the strings.
