When I feel grimy I do, it helps make the strings last longer and I like to have things that I touch clean also. If I just pick up the guitar to play a few licks though I usually don't.

I have to agree with drew on this one. When I freshly wash my hands the guitar's neck feels sticky... not so slippery as a guitar neck should. But I usually wash my hands then do something else that's not dirty for a few minutes :wink:

Although there's a different problem that has cropped up: the new Foam soap dispensers. I find that the foam makes my hands sticky and interferes with playing. So, just plain water when that is all that is available.

I think the foam soap stuff is awesome! It makes my hands much smoother on the neck than any other soap does for some reason... I never figured out why though. I want one in my basement so I can just wash my hands and slide like crazy up and down the neck all day long :32:

As for plain water, it just doesn't cut it but when that's all that's available... *shrugs*

I wonder what the lifespan difference is between the people who obsessively wash their hands, the people who do it on a regular (but not constant) basis, and those who don't wash them enough.

I wash before and after handling food/cooking, and after I've used the ol' toilet, or working with chemicals, car, wood working, gardening.

But I think some of us are becoming too 'anti-germ/bacteria' and all our actions against these tiny things may leave the immune system unprepared for disease etc .... Hrmmm

Here's where I reveal my geekyness.

Yes, always, and I'll make anyone who's gonna play my guitar do it too... I have a friend who will literally kill a set of new strings in 5 minutes flat his hands sweat so much.

nope, only clean em when there's a visible dirty spot or they are greasy from food. I probably should wash them more often, but I'm too lazy...

I don't unless my hands are really dirty/oily. It takes about 15-20 minutes after washing my hands before they feel "right" going up and down the neck.

Sorry for going a tad off-topic, but when theres a buildup of dirt on the fretboard (see TO's pics!!), does it have an affect on the tone/sustain, etc.?

My guitar teacher was exactly the same, he'd examine peoples hands before he let them play his guitar.
